    Snow Chains for 35" Tyres

I am considering doing an offroad trip up in the snow and a trip requirement is to carry chains (yes we know 4wds do not have to carry chains but we will).

My intention was to to rent some but my search of hire shops in the Canberra, Cooma, Jindabyne area has indicated that they do not stock them for 9.00x16 or 255/100R16.

Purchase is about $450 - $500 which is a bit much for the amount of trips that I will need chains.

So has any hired chains for 35" in the southern NSW area? Where did you get them from?

    Thanks

I pretty much doubt that you'd be able to rent them in that size Gary.
i did make a pair quite cheaply years ago by shortening 12.00x 20 chains from ex military AACO Internationals.
It has been about 15 years since I last used them and I can't seem to find them for some reason.

Thats what I figured but I thought I would ask just in case someone has found some.

I might end up buying some as they are useful in mud but chew up the track a bit much.

    Cheers

In the kind of muddy hill conditions I used them in, I found they chewed up the tracks much less than spinning bar treads would have done.Much safer on steeeep slippery offcamber downslopes too.

Not if you are a 4wd - there is another thread on this somewhere.

I beg to differ. Worked in the ski industry for 5 years.

I know of places this year people have been turned away by Rangers in 4wd's as they did not have chains. They were not even fitting them that day on 2wd.
No chains in car no entry to the park.

    Cheers

See - quotes in the attached thread with respect to NSW/Vic legislation that indicates that 4wds are exempt. All points of view are discussed.

Are snow chains MANDATORY in NSW on 4WD

If you disagree please put your views on the thread in the above link.

In this thread I am more interested in where I can hire chains for 35" tyres.

    Cheers
