Running these with a defender ratio transfer case would be fine. Lt230 1.4?/1 but a bit on the tall side for stock disco gearing 1.21/1 . Would be ok as a second set but may be a bit much for daily driving
Has anyone run these tyres with the 300 tdi engine without reduction gears how did it go??

Yea its on a disco and i have intentions on putting some reduction gears just wondering if it would be alright for a few months
Are you more worried about on road driving with standard gearing and 33's or off road rock hopping with standard gears? Or both?
From memory fitting a Defender transfer case will give you a lower road going overall ratio but won't change low range for off road.
If you want both then you will need to fit different diff gears, 4.12's take the overall gearing back both in top and low range to as if your using standard size wheels.
You can buy and import Ashcroft diff gears from either the US or England for quite reasonable cost now since the exchange rate has improved.
If I was fitting different diff gears I'd also fit a at least a rear locker at the same time and decent rear axles. Then you will have a very capable off roader. Once you go down this path though it can and will get expensive.
My V8 D1 which has been chipped and has had a full exhaust including headers fitted is a pleasure to drive on road with 33's with standard gearing, but off road in low range the gearing is occassionally to high for the really hard stuff.

I've run 235/85s on my D1 for a while (from my Defender 130). Not nearly as wide as your 285/75s, but they'd be the same diameter approx.
I had tyre rubbing on body when it flexed and when on the wheel turn stops. Was OK as long as you kept on level ground and didn't turn too hard
Accelleration was abysmal, as you'd expect, but it got me through for 2 or 3 months while I organised new tyres.

I have run BFG Km2's in 285.75 on a 300 tdi 130 with 1.2 t case for the past year. 5th gear isn't as useable when loaded as before my 1.4 tcase blew but otherwise has been fine.
