    pocket the savings

New rubber en-route from tirerack. I know it's been done to death but I got 4x Yokohama Geolandar 265 60 R18 A/T-S for $152 US each! The last set cost me $420 AUS each from a local. $954 AUS including shipping leaves me mucho moola to spend on Disco mods
I am even happy with the shipping costs as I was just quoted $400 to ship a 12kg box 3'x2'x9" from over there. 4 tyres weigh 74kg

I'm very tempted to do this too but I am concerned about getting a tyre shop to fit them. Surely they'd be very unhappy about someone fronting up with 5 new imported tyres to fit.

No, I've done this - Bob Jane T Marts in Adelaide; I had them fit 5 MTR's tyres onto 5 second hand RRS rims and it was no issue at all - I agreed to a wheel alignment to "do the right thing" and put some profit in their til; and when I swapped the MTR's back to HT's after the end of the trip they did that for me too at minimal cost - no doubt knowing I will be back. Which I will be. And my better half with her car. All about service I guess

They are free to refuse the job or quote a higher price to make it worth their while.

You may have bought them insterstate for all they know.

If you want to get some practice removing/fitting tyres (for when you go bush), you can always fit and inflate them yourself, then take them in to be balanced.

most tyre shops are happy to fit your rubber to your rims for you.

my local shop, per tyre, charges me $10 to mount rubber, $15 if I want them balanced and depending on what size tyre they are up to $30 if I want disposal included.

If I show up with the 5 tyres and 5 prestripped precleaned rims its $50 for the 5 fitted and balanced. $100 If I want the old rubber disposed of.

Naturally NO tyre shop offers any kind of warranty on rubber that youve provided for them to fit nor do they accept any responsibility for the mounting of the rim to the vehicle, nor should they.

A local indie is happy to fit and balance for me. I don't need them just yet, the current set has 45k and I will probably get another 15k out of them. I got them because of tasty price, I love the tyre, the exchange rate and tax return money arriving. The money I saved will mostly go towards my mod wish list and therefore end up in the local economy.

My LT245/70-17 AT/S (also ex Tirerack) haven't dissapointed me yet after 7K kms and without any signs of wear. They know how to throw the mud, as evidenced by the quantity that drops from under the guards when stopped. They know how to throw stones onto the trailer too!
