Grinding noise when taking off. PUMA110, MY2010

Hi All,

Hard problem to pinpoint as it's intermittent, but when I take off in 1st, (and very rarely in reverse), there is a grinding noise from somewhere close by, ie gearbox, front diff, can't really tell.
The gearbox was repaired under warranty after only 2000km due to a broken selection fork which locked the gearbox in 1st.
Apart from wait till something actually fails in order to find the problem, how should I approach this with the dealer as it's so intermittent. Can run fine for a week and I'm thinking the car is perfect (as I actually think it almost is) and there's the grinding noise that may last half a second. Seems to have a ringing component to the noise as if the bell housing has some harmonics going as well.

Could it be coming from the Transmission brake drum? Next time it happens lightly pull on the handbrake and see if that stops the noise. It could just be the brake shoes needing slackened off slightly.

I sincerely hope that's the case. It may be as I've had some issues with the transmission brake drum before that were addressed. It would explain the faint ringing noise associated with the sound, but why would it only happen when moving off from standstill?

There can be a light film of corrosion or even muck adhered to the inside of the drum which gets cleaned off when the vehicle first moves off which gives the grinding rubbing noise. I get it here in the winter time and also after fording muddy water crossings or when its wet. I just pull on the handbrake slightly to clean the shoes. But it does sound like the shoes need slackened off slightly as they may have not checked the clearance when it was addressed the last time.
