    Odd, troubling noise

My Land Rover is a Defender Td5 110, CSW. From the region around where the ignition key goes in, I hear a noise somewhere between a tapping and a ticking. It's not there all the time, but most of the time. When it is there, it's not regular like the ticking of a clock, but irregular. At first I thought that some of the keys on the same ring were tapping against the surrounding plastic as they moved with the movement of the vehicle, but that isn't the case.

    Please, any ideas or suggestions?

In behind the dash in that area, on my D2 TD5, is a small fan, that sometimes gets clogged with fluff @ small bits of junk. This sometimes causes a whirring sound. A member here, mturri, has posted a tutorial on how to clean it, around about 11 APRIL, 2011, from memory.Hope this helps. Bob
I’m pretty sure the dinosaurs died out when they stopped gathering food and started having meetings to discuss gathering food

no fans in dashboards of defender td5's that I know of...

Does the plastic steering column surround move, and can you move it to make the sound?
Can you move the steering wheel up? this would imply loose bolts on the mount
Or more simply, is there anything perhaps wedged under the left side of the instrument cluster assembly? (in the dash tray, for lack of a good description)

Doesn't sound like a relay does it? or (god forbid) arcing electricity?

Theres 4 screws holding the instrument assembly on, and 4 more holding the setting surround together, just have to take a look for anything loose in there

Could be something in your engine bay tapping against your steering column. When this happens it sounds like its coming from that area..

    testy tick

    Hi Popotla

An annoying tick from the dash of our Discovery turned out to be the trip counter not being reset properly, but I have never experienced that problem with the Defender.

    Cheers Arthur
