Rhino Roof Tracks - RRS

Has any one fitted Rhino Roof Tracks to the roof of their RRS? Are they easy to fit and does a section of the black trim on the roof have to be cut out to fit them.

Later I will be getting aero bars and a rhino rack - it there any point in going to three bars or will two be OK - I understand the roof is limited to 75kg so not a lot of gear can be carried.

Garry I got Rola bars fitted to my RRS. I don't know whether they're similar to Rhino racks. But with the Rola bars, they just bolt into the existing holes under the black strip on either side of the roof. You'll find three points available on each side.

Having said that, I was dudded on the Rola bars. I specifically told them I was heading up the Gibb River Rd when I went in to have them fitted.

After a trip to Cape Leveque and back to Broome (VERY corrugated) I discovered two of the 3/8th stainless bolts holding the bars in had literally sheared off. I was only carrying a spare wheel/tyre and a shovel up there, so nowhere near 75KG).

Replaced the stainless bolts with high tensile ones, and two of these subsequently sheared off going up the Gibb.

The roof rack people later told me these bars 'aren't warranted for off-road'. Er, so what is it about 'I'm going up the Gibb River Rd' difficult to understand?

Thanks for the comments - I am not after the Rola style of bar. Rhino make a similar bar but also have a commercial bar (noisy) and an interim aero bar - it is a straight bar that you can connect various bits too - including the ends.

As the track is screwed to the roof allowing the bars to be placed where required, some of the rack weight is also shared by the length of the track not just the screw points.

if they are ide assume that the rhino stuff would fit easy.

you can just see the OEM roof rails, the rhino stuff just bolts into the track.

I don't believe so - I think the D3/D4 have roof rails that you bolt things too - the RRS has tracks that roof racks slide into. Of course the roof on a RRS is a completely different shape and length to a D3/4.

The price of the OEM tracks are over the top and the Rhino version is $145.

Hi Garry,
It depends if you optioned the car with the LR rails or not.

I fitted Rhino Rack rails and crossbars to my D3, and am about to install on my D4. You measure and mark a certain distance from the back, on the channel covers, then lift them out and get tin snips and trim them off. The Rhino rails then bolt over the top of the channel - covering where you trimmed the original cover off. I expect this process would be the same on the RRS.

For the record, it only takes about 1.5 hours to set the whole thing up. As they say: measure twice, cut once!

Thanks Rob - no OEM tracks fitted that is why I am going the cheaper Rhino tracks. I was hoping they would just go over the roof trim as the holes are already in the trim with covers over the holes.

Have just fitted 3 Rhino aero bars to my L322.Not Sport bars / full width. No factory roof rail fitted. Just lifted the roof flaps ( Didn't trim) unscrewed studs, replaced with new spuds attached roof bar feet and centred rails. Not long at all. Roof flaps stay up but inside feet. Not sure if your RRS will be the same. Could have had any combination of bars. ie Front / Middle. Front / Rear. Middle / Rear or as I have F/M/R. Hope to fit a pod , Long skinny wire basket & fox wing when we go away

Bars & feet cost $550 for 3 for L322

Hey Garry,

I have the Rhino Aero bars and expedition style rack on my sport

PIcs below.

I had ARB fit mine as the cost was only minimal as part of the package for the whole kit.

Just came back from the Kimberley and did the Gibb River Road and some of the rough cut through tracks and had a spare steel rim on the roof as well as a space case full of gear and had no problems.

Not sure about the load rating mentioned on this thread for the RRS roof.

I had myself (80kgs) and two kids (age 10 and 12) up on the racks
plus the gear mentioned above whilst away on the trip and had no probs. (might also have just got lucky though so will look into that one!)
