    I've joined the Defender Club!

I've gone and purchased myself a new work/play car

1992 LAND ROVER DEFENDER Cars For Sale in QLD - CarPoint Australia

It's a 200 Tdi 110 tray back ute. I've loved the look of the utes for a long time now and had a couple looked at before I purchased this one. I had a mechanic go over it, and other than a few little problems (to be expected of a car this age) all seems well. It is currently on the back of a truck coming from Qld to Melbourne.

I've got a few little plans for it, but also have a few questions for the Defender gurus. I'm planning a dual battery system, mud pod with new stereo and uhf, and a general tidy up. Suspension I will give it a basic two inch lift, with 3degree castor corrected arms and cranked trailing arms. I'll be running 33inch all terrain tires as daily tires, and have a set of 35's I'll be using for 4 wheeling/camping weekends.

I have a front diff lock and upgraded cv's that I'll put in. Now for the question. The front diff is already built up and running 4.11 ratios. The rear diff is completely standard at the moment. I'm planning on putting a Detroit in there though. Would I better off changing the front ratios back to standard gearing, or changing the rear ratios to 4.11s?
If it was on a Disco I would keep with the 4.11s, but having heard the Defenders have the different ratios in the transfer case I don't know with way to go

    Congrats.

So are you going to get rid of the hoist? Why do you need a lift? There is not much in the way of body panels to get caught up. 33" tyres certainly aren't that outrageous. I would be leery about having a suspension lift with a hydraulic hoist, and then with freight on that.

Are you also saying that the diff ratios are different between front and rear? If so, then you need to get that sorted without delay.

The hoist is on there, i doubt I will ever use it. Will eventually build a new tray with some dog boxes/kennels.

The rear has had a 2 inch lift/heavy duty springs changed over already, the front is original. So will upgrade the front to suit the rear.

Currently the diffs in the car are standard. I have a complete front diff that has a locker, 4.11s, heavy duty axles and cv's that I will put under the car. I just need to decide what to do with the rear so I can buy the parts etc. Either a 4.11 for the rear, or a set of standard ratios for the front.

No doubt the lift accommodates drop when the tray is loaded. If you lift the front the same amount then it will sit bum down when loaded. That can negatively affect your handling, especially with the tray sitting so high.

    Makes more sense.

Someone else can deal with that one

If your going to run 35's than go 4.11 as the 200 is no power house !!
I ran a county on 36's with standard gears & didnt use 5th much..

You will find that if you run 4.11s then the 35s will be fine, but will be a real pain to drive with the 33s as the engine will be revving too high at normal driving speed, and if you run the 3.54s it will be ok on the 33s and you won't pull the 35s.I run 35s with 4.11s and it is fine.People with TD5s fit a Disco transfer and 4.11s which means that they can run the 33s and due to the extra power are still able to pull the 35s.Unfortunately the 200Tdi doesn't have enough grunt, even after tweaking the pump.I just chose to run the 35s and 4.11s and have an offroad weapon.

Nice choice by the way,I like the look of tray back Defenders

    Hi,
congrats, I'm sure you will enjoy doing the mods and driving it.

Link to how I put my SC80 in the rear of the battery compartment under the seat.

Well done! I like 200tdi utes as well.

You could keep the 4.11s and swap to a disco (1.22) t-case instead of the defender 1.41. If you keep the 1.41 and 4.11 your gearing will be ~16% lower than a disco on 4.11s.

If you are running 35s regularly then I think the 4.11s will give useful ratios.
