    Engine breather- Puma

Had slight oil spray on under side of bonnet above oil filler cap and on rocker cover, removed filler cap and engine seemed to be pressurizing. I removed enging breather diaphragm and spring assembily about 1000km ago and oil on rocker cover and bonnet gone. Also slight leak on vac pump has stopped. There is no sign of exess oil in the breather pipe that goes to turbo, and the engine seems to be running a lot smoother. Has any one had similar? Was the breather assembily faulty (no sign of damage), or just another bullsh#t gadget. Might have been designed by the same engineers who think EGR is a good thing.

Was the breather filter replaced at last service?

As far as I can see there is no filter, only a plastic/rubber diaphragm and spring assembly to isolate the engine from blow back from turbo. But as it is variable vane turbo I thought blow back would be negligable anyway.

Freelander Td4 and L322 Td6 (same engine with two more cylinders) are variable vane and suffer badly if the breather filter is not replaced.

I will ask the oil people what they think..

Cheers, any info is always good. But like I stated, there is no breather filter on the engine, only a direct line from rocker cover to turbo inlet with diaphragm to stop back pressure from entering engine, as far as I can tell.

Just checked the workshop manual, only oil separator, no sign of any filter.
