Land Rover Questions

Hey Guys

I’ll start of by saying I know nothing about land rovers. (except the old series ones look great) and sorry if ive posted this in the wrong spot.

I’ve been looking for an old 4x4 for about a year now; previously I’ve been after an old 40series that I can roll swag out in the back. Still haven’t found one I like or in good condition

Ive Just started looking at the old series land rovers, and got a few questions you guys might be able to help with.

Are they reliable?

What should I look for when going to check them out?

And how easy are they to work on/ get parts for?

Hi Ryan,
To answer your question from my point of view, As for reliability a landrover is no different than any other vehicle, it depends on the amount regular maintenance and maintenance done correctly, in saying this you must remember that most of the series Landies are now over 40 years of age and how they are used is another major factor
As for parts available it not a problem getting 95% of stuff new from dealers in Aust. or the UK even the USA has parts available. Them there is quiet a lot of second hand parts available from other landie nut from time to time and alot on ebay most times.
If you are not sure or confident about what to buy see if you can get some one from this sight to go with you to look at what interest you.

I’ve been expecting a vehicle 40 years old to have its fair share of problems. The occasional 4x4ing along the beach at Double Island is about as extreme use as it’s likely to get

I wouldn't know how to tell the difference between a dud and something amazing. I study Civil Engineering at uni so don’t really have any practical skills, or mates with to much mechanical experience (or any experience with older cars).

Wouldn’t mind checking out the ex military one down in Beenleigh, even just to see what I should be looking at. Is it better to go ex military?

Ryan, welcome to the forum

As Hodgo has stated most parts are easily accessible.

The series 3's were first produced in 1971 so only first ones are 40 years old, my daily driver, a series 3, is only 33 years old and quite reliable

they all are with regular maintenance, and if something goes go wrong they are easy to fix...an example, my series wiring had a short and half the dash burnt out, a few hours later all fixed and hasn't missed a beat since

As for whether to buy an Ex-Military vehicle, it depends if you want to keep it original, which would be harder to source parts that are only on ex-mil landys. There are plenty of old Landy's out there that are not ex-mil, the older series 1's being more scarce, but series 2 & 3's are around

G'day Ryan, if you can get your hands on the Sept. issue of Land Rover monthly,printed in the UK, there is a lift out, titled 40 years of the series 111. On page 8, titled thru the years, starting in 1971, thru to end of production in 1985, all the changes/ upgrades to the series 111 are listed. Excellent read if you are into the series 111, Bob

Definitely....there like wives, you know you want one or should have one, but cant for the life of you think why as they only cause headaches and empty wallets, maybe its for that moment of undeniable bliss when your pulling a $100k Land Cruiser Sahara out of the Mud in your $1800 Landy!
