Thanks for the feedback....
Hi, my wife has just purchased a FL2 with 19" rims - not delivered yet.
We plan on taking it camping and occasionally up the beach....
I was thinking of getting some 17" rims with some AT tyres.
Has anyone got a set of hack rims and AT's and if so what are you running?
Thanks for the feedback....
Dorko bought a set from somewhere in Brisbane and had them shipped to Perth. I think it was from Speedy Wheels? It was a few years ago and cost a couple of thousand. Maybe search the threads for details? He was happy enough to leave them on because they were so much better on the beach. Also I would suggest 245/65/17 being 1 size up and still legal. I run Yokohama Geolander AT-S and really happy with them.
Put some boggers on it
I wanted 17" steel rims for my new TD4, got 18" alloys instead (factory fit). And they are an absolute cow to find tyres for! There's a good selection of road tyres for 18" but a combination AT or off-road tyre? The fitted Goodyear Wrangler All Weather M+S 235 60 R18 103V tyres ($350-$370ea) are bettered only by Michelins @ $420 or more. They work surprisingly well in sand, and even (nervously) for mud. But they're combination, not off-road tyres. 17" rims - if you can find them! - give you a plethora of choices. A new LR 18" rim (only) is over $1000 - each! - from LR. I got a spare-spare rim from Graeme Cooper for $150 - but that was luck. Finding custom-made is hard here in Oz, because they're 8.5 (width, I think) - if they were 8.0 or 9.0, more choice.
For a complete set of 6 (4 + spare + spare-spare) it's worth going to the British www sites, but do ensure that they are FL2, not FL1!
If you want to keep the 18" rims: A recent web search turned up Nitto Terra Grapplers (255/55 R18). General commentary puts them in the same league as BFGs. The overall circumference is within the 3% margin of the original 235/60 R18 factory tyres, but I'm not sure about whether the extra width will cause problems under the wheel arches at full lock or on uneven ground.
Other options to fit the standard 18" rim I've found are the ContiCross Contact AT 255/60R18; and the Pirelli Scorpion Zero (235/60R18), though from available product information the Pirellis don't really look like typical AT tyres.
I'm currently on the factory standard Continentals, but am favouring the Nittos myself. Grateful for anyone's thoughs or experiences of them.
Pirelli Scorpions don't look much but I've read good reviews of their ability from people living out in the centre who drive rough gravel a lot. They apparently outlast a lot of the so called better off road tyres.
Just went through the process of fitting General grabbers AT 255/60R18 on the TD4. There is touching -just- on full lock. You have just 1-2cm gap on the rear to the strut. The spare will not fit in the well. Too close for me.![]()
I had the same situation with my 19 inch wheels as I intend to do quite a few klm on dirt roads through the kimberley as I have been working up here for several years and have been shown and told of places that the average 4wd tourist dont know exist .So I did the wheel and tyre search and found it very difficult to find suitable 17 inch wheels that fitted and did not look like a hoon buzz box , but I persisted and found a full set of 5 landrover freelander 2 17 inch alloy wheels and pirreli scorpian for under $2000 . Try other 4wd drive chat sites ect as that is where I found mine.good luck
