No matter what we personally think about Police, we'd be in a far worse situation if they weren't there, and the community as a whole should be responsible for assisting physically and psychologically injured Police.

The following is the text from the Keepourcops organisation.

"Don't kill our Death & Disability Scheme!

Every day our officers place themselves at risk to serve our community. That's why it's so important we have an effective Death & Disability Scheme to support them if they are seriously injured in the line of duty. (Click here to download a Death & Disability fact sheet)

But now the NSW Government wants to attack our Death & Disability Scheme and make substantial changes that will slash the protections available to officers who can no longer work due to the injuries they sustain protecting our community.

Under the Government's proposed scheme, the longer it takes you to recover from your injuries, the worse off you will be financially. It will only cause seriously injured officers more harm and stress.

I agree.
In general Police do an awesome job.
We hate them when they give us a ticket, which is our fault as we have breached the laws we instituted.
We hate them when they arrest us or one of our family, but we or they have committed a crime.
They are our best friends when we have a prowler, some one commits a crime against us or we need protection.
They do an awesome, hard job same as all emergency services personnel.
Yes there is the occassional bad apple or just downright pedantic *****, but as a whole they are a great bunch of people and oftem maligned because people will not take accountability for their own actions.
Just Saturday night here we had a thing called the Bloody Slow Cup, a big Rugby match between local Aussies and Kiwis with all funds raised going to Police Legacy. This was started after a horrific air crash in 2000 that claimed the lives of 4 police officers who were assisting a local community.
I support this type of thing whole heartedly and was straight down to buy supportes shirts etc for the whole family. If you see me wearing the shirt it has the service numbers of the police killed on the arm.
It was a great weekend with my boy playing in the juniors against a Bayswater team that make the trip up every year.
The weekend has several Rugby games, a 20/20 cricket match which Brad Hogg came up for and my boy got balls, bat and clothing signed by him, Golf tournaments etc.
It was a great night and several thousand people turned up.

I was in the NSW railways and it was well known that one didn't get involved with miscreants as the railways will not support you if you get injured. You would be blamed for the problem, not supported - hence the reason many railway staff will turn away from, or a blind eye to, problem passengers.

Maybe if such a large amount of them Didn't rort the system the insurance companies may have been willing to continue to underwrite the scheme.

All the change does is bring it into line with workers compensation for the rest of the workforce. I'm a firm believer that a cop or soldiers life or wellbeing is no more or less important than anyone else in Australia.

They choose to do a job, if that has risks then that's their choice, and yes I have friends and family in both areas.

You are entitled to your opinion most certainly. However Police frequently have to attend to the body and details of the deceased in fatal road crashes, they have to deal with suicides and murders and spend hours in the environment well after the other emergency services have gone.

Most Police enter the force to help the community, they don't do it to be facing lunatics with knives or guns. They also don't become Police to have nightmares and flash-backs years and even decades after having to attend horrific scenes.

As for rorting the system there are bad apples in every walk of life, probably in your career as well. But if the risks are too bad you can refuse or walk away from the task. Police don't have that luxury.

I'm happy that you have chosen not to sign the petition, thank goodness there are others who do value the work of Police (and other first responders and the Military).

I also feel that veterans, should be entitled to all the care and support they need, irrespective of whether it is more than other injured workers get.

BTW: I am not a member of the Police and the only family connection is my nieces husband is a Police officer, but have worked with Police and seen some of the issues they have to deal with.
