Have you checked the old seal came off with the filter and it is not doubled up? Easy enough to miss and will cause it to leak.
Evening all,
After changing oils and filters on the weekend, I had to tighten the oil filter with a filter wrench - by hand, it wouldn't seal. After a short drive (about 30mins), I noticed a new trail of oil as I backed up the drive. On checking, oil was leaking from the oil filter housing where the filter screws up to.
I don't dare to tighten anymore, and yes, I did lube the filter seal before spinning on.
So, I believe that I'm up for a new oil filter adaptor housing (ERR2711).
Anyone have any ideas why this happened? What will the adaptor cost and is it a complex job to change out?

Sure did - all old parts accounted for....
Have you made sure that the leak isn't from the oil pressure switch?
Other places to check would be,oil leaking from the vent hole in the lift pump.or oil leaking from the seal at the base of the vacuum pump.Both these places can make oil appear like it is leaking around the filter.

Thanks Wayne - checked that too. It all seems to point to a problem with the adaptor - not that I want a new adaptor
at the prices quoted : cheapest $280 dearest $445. Checking the UK and it might be the way to get a new one....
We'll see....
I would take it off and inspect it before buying a new adapter, there's not much that can go wrong with them, after all it is only a lump of cast iron.
It is more likely that the problem is as described by Lowranger, either oil leaking from the oil cooler pipes, the thermo valve, the last is directly above the filter and hard to see, Regards Frank.

Before committing to buying anything, I've relied on the infinite wisdom of you all and have gone through the process again.
Dusty - turns out that on a PREVIOUS service I didn't check properly then either. While I accounted for everything from this change out, I obviously didn't before as the oil filter seal was still there - clean down properly, checked all surfaces etc, accounted for the correct number of seals, put it back together and it's not leaking, not over tightened (geez the more I write the more stupid I feel).
Anyway, thanks to you all for your replies and suggestions. Problem solved.
