    HELP Springs

Ok set some time aside to do my springs and shocks a couple of silly questions,

King springs are marked right and left. Is the right hand side the drivers side?

Also have some spring isolators ANR2938 these are off Disco's but read you can use them on Defenders (Mines a 2001 110 TD5). anyone had any prob lems usihg these.

Finally do you need to remove the (blaci) cover from the gurad to replace ths shocks and tower?

    THANKS IN ADVANCE

The taller of the Pair goes on the drivers side....

Works really well actually, greatly reduces the road noise.

Finally do you need to remove the (black) cover from the guard to replace the shocks and tower?
Yes if doing springs & shocks - No if only doing springs.

    THANKS IN ADVANCE
    Your very welcome

Hi yes you have to remove the front turrets for spring and shock replacement. The Right side is drivers. The springs on a defender our a bigger circumference so the isolators will not fit. Was asked to try on a 08 def(rear)

On a 110 the isolators will only fit the front springs, and from friends experience, they won't last much beyond a year.

    Thanks

Interestingly the spring isolators would be a very snug fit into the kings springs (front top) you would have to push them (lip) in to work. Tombie was this you expearance?

In which case they will not be going in

    Tombie, Michael2.

    Thanks for your help today.

Not being rushed for time I got the drivers side front done today and will do the passengers side tomorrow. Should be a lot quicker now I know what to do and a few tricks.

I'm also fitting Terraferma shock towers and dislocation cones.

A bit annoyed at the shock tower as the drivers side requires a slight cut to the guard to allow the tower (one support) to fit without rubbing the "lip" of the guard. I believe this has been commented on before ?

    The other things I noted and would appreciate advice on;
    1. The lip on the rubber bush washers (top) is not an exact fit (diameter) to the shock tower so when fully tightened there is still slight movementin the shock shaft at the top. Don’t see any way of fixing this.

    2. The shock (Koni Raids) aren't centered in the dislocation cone. Clearance comes to about a 1/4inch at the closes point. Given I've only done one side perhaps this will correct itself when I do the other side. Given the tower and shocks can only go in one way guess this must be right?

    3. Using dislocation cones means the bolts on shock tower retainer only just clear the nut when tightened. Certainly wouldn't have worked with the spring isolators. I was thinking of drilling the bolts out but then how would you tighten up long bolts unless you welded them in place?

A quick measure shows the vehicle has been raised about 2 1/2 inches using the standard (height) King Spring replacement. Again once I get the other side done I’ll move the vehicle back to where I took the original measurement and see what the difference is.

Answer for 2: The top shock mounting hole is not meant to be centred in the shock tower. This is because the axle doesn't move in a purely vertical fashion, it travels in an arc during articulation, and thus the shock needs a slight offset to allow the shock body to not rub the spring.

    Day 2

Just tried substituting the "original both sides" lipped washer into the "Tirra F" shock tower good fit. Measured the Koni and they are slightly smaller diameter external and shaft diameter (ceter hole).

So it's either use the Koni and have slight movement or use original cupped washer and have a snug fit.

I'm going with reusing the original lipped washers on the tower.

    Any thoughts

Since there is no response Day 2
Saw more problems. The Tirra F shock tower on the passanger side will require more cutting than the drives side of the inner guard before it would fit. Rang the supplier who has advised they should be a direct replacement for the original? The holes line up however the tower needs to rotate anti clockwise about 1" so it will not foul the guard. Will take it back tomorrow if the ones they have in stock are the same I'll go back to the standard tower. Shame because with the Tirra F tower you could reach into the tower to compress the sharft to alter the adjustment. With the standard tower I think you will have to remove the tower to make the adjustment.
