Transfer case oil leak

I am chasing down some serious shaking in the front end of my MY2010 110 cab/chas and the next step after getting wheels balanced was to take out the front drive shaft.

Can you imagine my surprise when I was doused in gearbox oil when I pulled the drive shaft uni flange away from the flange on the front of the transfer case.

Seems the space around the nut which holds the flange onto the drive shaft was full of oil.

Is this normal ? Another LR design feature ?

I bought the truck new in January and it only has 20,000 kms on it. The dealer at the 20k service told me to go away and get the wheels balanced when I reported the shaking so I don't expect much joy there if I just wander in and report oil in the uni joint assembly.

Any comments ?

Nope, just standard, factory fitted HD suspension.

Now has ARB bar but no winch on front.

Took the front prop shaft out and went for a drive and still the serious wobbles come in at about 87 kmph.

So is now booked in with the dealer again. This time to look at swivel pin adjustment.

I asked the dealer if it could be shocks but was told, no, we don't get problems with shocks on those.

So let's see what we find next week.

No seriously, this is not normal and indicates that transfer case oil is leaking through the splines on the flange. Remedy is to remove the shaft nut on the flange, clean the area under the flange washer and apply silicon or hylomar sealant and then torque it up again. If you don't have a torque wrench put a paint mark on the shaft and nut and then count the number of turns to remove it. When you re install it just tighten it the same number of turns and then line the paint marks up. But having said this, the dealer should be doing the repair for you.

I guess the question here is have you got one problem or two? Is the oil leak a consequence of shaking or an unrelated issue?

The oil leak should be a simple fix unless some neanderthal has scoured the transfer box housing with a screwdriver where the previous oil seal has been removed (I've seen that quite a few times in the uk).

As for the shaking, get them to look at the track rod end ball joints also, as well as confirm all bushes are ok.

I'd agree that shocks won't be a cause.

Does the car oversteer, or is it a bit unpredictable in the steering department? If so check the rear trailing arm bushes, these have been known to cause vibration when driving when they have failed.
