Perhaps not everything is as it seems to be

Great Wall Haval is rumoured to actually be a BMW

"Rumours said, that the new Great Wall Haval is simply a new or former X-raid BMW X3CC platform. The car looks totally similar in many technical and optical parts, Great Wall changed from petrol- to diesel-engine - or is China copying again?

It looks to be a big secret. Great Wall officially announced no technical details (because they would be similar with the BMW-Engine) and most of the parts are 100% similar with the former X-Raid BMW. Thomas Quandt from X-raid officially says: "We only helped Great Wall, like we helped Volvo Pewano". But this is the "light" answer, because inside the Volvo is maybe 20% X-raid, but the Great Walls are nearly identically."

Also, I suspect there's more BMW X3 DNA in those Minis competing this year than Mini DNA.

So? They run in a modified/prototype class not showroom.

Why does anyone expect them to resemble an off the shelf item. Since the prototype class was introduced, this has always been so. Remember the plastic fantastic Pah hair Hos. I dont think BMW nor VW from previous years, would advertise their success the way Bitsamissen did.
