Hi guys, we have just ordered a new Jayco Eagle outback. It will have a total tow weight of around 1200kg loaded. It will have an estimated 100kg ball weight. The tow vehicle is a great 2002, 110 Extreme. It is in like new condition. The TD5 has been reflashed for a wee bit extra. The suspension is 50mm over standard Terra Firma and all sitting on 255x85 BFG Mudders.
We are planing some longish trips to see the sights. How do you think the Deefer will perform ??.
i think i read around here somewhere that you shouldn't tow in top gear as this is overdrive and not designed to pull weight, this good differ between models, i'm sure someone will add to this thread about it.
I have a puma 110 crew cab and pull a GIC camper trailer, and would love to use 6th gear but am to frightened of stripping top gear, fuel economy and noise is woeful, so if anyone knows different that would be great.

I tow my Coromal Off Roader (2000kg's) with my PUMA all the time in 6th gear. No problems or any trace of a problem developing.
A good friend has a 2009 Ford Transit flat tray, same motor and box as the PUMA. Always lugs pallets of tiles in the back and 4m trailer full of gear. Overall weight well above 3.5t (Trailer and gear). He has got 234,000k's, up and down the F3 in 6th every day without a problem.
I ensure the engine is not labouring, I think that is the trick. Keep the rev's above 2000, and if you have to use more than 3/4 throttle change down.

I have a 04 TD5 Defender 110, chipped . Sounds just about like yours.
Also have a 2007 Jayco Penguin Outback ( near enough to yours)
(BTW the van is for sale I'll put it on ebay soon)
I used the van on 2 x 3month round aust trips towing with LCruisers. 80 1HDT & 105 1HZ
When I got my Defender it has 130 front springs & rear 130 helper springs,
It Towed & sat just right with the Van
But the 130 springs limited the articulation too much (not a towing issue - I just like all the artic I can when I'm in the bush) so I put standard 110 springs back & fitted Polyairs to the rear.
Now the 110 is just right for me & you don't need a ladder to get in, sits just about level when fully loaded with van & 15psi in the polyairs.
Ok so went on a Trip to Adelaide for 2 weeks the Defender is WAY better to tow with than either of the LandCruisers . Fuel consumption was 12.5 l/100k sitting at the speed limit, The Cruisers were 18 & 15 @ 10 k below the speed limit.
NO PROBLEMS AT ALL using 5th gear, If your cruise control keeps powering the TD5 along at the speed limit no need to change back to 4 unless its labouring. Its only Nissans where 5 OD is too small & everyone thinks it applies to all 4x4's.
The TD5 powers up hills with the Van almost as if its not even there, With the LandCruiser 105 it felt like I was towing a Semi Trailer. If I had your setup the only thing I'd do is go to the trouble (expense) of fitting Landrover 5 stud hubs to the Jayco (ALKO have them) & run the same wheel / tyre combo as the Landy, and some sort of posetive pressure system to the van. (like I did here Going Bush)
Im now looking forward to picking our Trakmaster Sturt up when its ready in May & off for 12 months in the Deefer !!
the 110 will be fine. I would how ever address some potential issues: I would fit a sump plate to the lt230 which is finned and increases oil capcity. I think you already have an oil cooler fitted to the R380...if it is only the pipe I would fit a proper rad type cooler. I would run Synthetic oil in both these. 5th is small and can be a problem, even though some people dont think so...drop back into 4th ocassionaly for a bit. The 255's will be fine on hwy but rob a little low down gearing on take off... make sure your radiatior is in tip top condition as with your whole cooling system. I would fit an non rover temp gauge like vdo as well as a egt...
