    Your opinion please

I am considering a new zoom lens.

The choice is between Canon EF 24-70mm f2.8L II USM and Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM.

From a simple reading of figures the f2.8 is faster than the F4 that is equipped with an image stabilizer that give a useful 2 stops decrease.

On another hand an f2.8 should theoretically give more contrast and higher color saturation.

What is your opinion on that?

    Thank you in advance

I've got the 24-105 and its a great lens, very versatile. The 2.8 would be great too but you're trading an f stop for focal length. Tough decision.

I have 24-105 as well and I am very happy with its performance on my 7D.

The 24-105 is my standard lens. Very easy to live with. Great lens.

    Hello Sue,

Thank you for your reply, but what makes the 24-70 superior to the 24-105?

What are the pros and cons of both lenses?

    Thank you

Maybe some images from each will help.

    Macro from the 24-105

    Landscape 3 image stitch.

I would go for the 24-70 and use a teleconverter when extra range it is required.
There is nothing that can replace the optic quality and the 24-70 is a very fine glass.

    Waiting for good glass

    Hi Lebanon

Personally I would go for the, Canon EF 24-70mm f2.8L II USM , as it would better for low light days for me.

I have placed an alert on eBay, to get an idea of the going price for second hand for that lens, but honestly now I would probably go straight to a brand new lens as the price difference just isn't there. You would need that difference if the second hand lens needs servicing when you receive it.

To try before you buy, then buy a second hand lens in the interim, maybe is the way to go. After you have made a choice and as these lenses are holding their price, you would be able to recoup your money to go towards the your preferred new lens, that you have then decided on.

While nowhere near the Canon EF 24-70mm f2.8L II USM in quality stakes, I use the Canon EF 28-135mm 1:3.5-5.6 IS , as my walk about lens.
This lens I brought second hand off eBay, then I had to repair it myself. I have hung onto this lens for a few years now until I was able to find something better. That time taken must say something about Canon lenses in general though.

With the IS function I don't rely on it, and look for some support for the camera body instead.
