S3 bell housing onto S2A gearbox???

    Hi All

I have a chap asking me to replace his damaged, series 3 4cyl gearbox, with a good one out of a series 2A 6cyl.

My question; Are the clutch bell housing's interchangeable between the front of the series 2A suffix B and series 3 gearboxes ?

We have a spare series 3 4cyl bell housing, part number 576714, but missing it's bearing retaining plate and the bolts, although we can use the parts from the damaged gearbox when the time comes to remove it.

    Thanks in advance Arthur

Someone may be more definite, but unless I am mistaken, they are interchangeable provided the 2a box is sufficiently late production (suffix B on).

Yes you can fit the SIII bellhousing to the SIIa box as 6 cyl are all the larger front layshaft bearings, but you will likely have to use the SIII primary pinion as they are sealed and most of the SIIa ones are not.

I have a SIII box with an SIIa bellhousing in one of my SIIB.

You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.

I have the same - mainly because I didn't want to change over all the clutch stuff - so it must work the other way.

I did did this several years ago and used the bell housing, input shaft and layshaft drive gear from the box you are taking the bell housing from, as someone said it must be a late series 2 box with the large layshaft front bearing

    Hi Betsy

Thanks for that, We'll see if all goes to plan.
