    When selling a bike....

....... does one let prospective buyers ride it?

It's always a worry as one can't always go with them. In this case, I can ride my other bike but the bike being sold (1300) would soon lose me on the 650.

Admittedly, the bike is insured for more than it's advertised at but.....

I'm in the same quandry at the moment. I want to sell my FJR and buy something slower so I dont kill myself at speed - I'll simply maim myself on a slower bike instead . So what to do?

I am going to go on a case by case basis. If an 18 year old with a flat cap shows up, no way buddy! If its someone with experience or someone I like, I reckon you have to take the risk.

Yes - an issue but look a it from the buyers side.

If I am buying - if the seller said no ride I would be saying no buy - what have you got to hide.

Unless something extremely rare - there will always be another bike with an owner who will let you test ride. You just have to be patient.

    1. Check licence and record all details, photcopy if you can. See if you can spot if it's a cheap fake. You won't spot a good fake.

    2. Record rego no. of any car or bike the buyer came in. If he/she is a 'walk up', probably mate parked around the corner (suspicious).

    3. Check any car/bike the buyer came in that the No. on the rego label (or that there is a label) matches the No. plate. Also that the back No. plate on a car matches the front (you would be surprised how often they don't).

    4. If you let an unlicensed rider go for a test ride, you are legally liable, not just fines, but for civil damages if the dill hits anything (insurance will wipe you).

    5. Put the money from the bike sale with the money you get from selling the Range Rover and buy a Defender.

That is probably your answer right there.

Win/win situation. Either it sells or it is stolen, either way you get the money.
