    TD5 DEFENDER CLUTCH/DUAL MASS F/W FAILURE?

    errorHi All,

My defender today started to do some funny things... On the way home there was intermittant loss of engine breaking on decel.- kind of went into freewheel.

got progressivley worse on way home.

now in drive way I can select forward gears and drive is fine but in reverse no drive.
Ive locked the centre diff to eliminate a broken axle or worn drive flange and no go.
It will move slightly in reverse when revs are increased.

    any thoughts appreciated?

    Happy easter.

    stall check in 4,5,r...

if you dont get a stall out in 5/r but you do in 4th you need to pull the box.

If the dual mass is gone completely you get similar performace as a slipping oily clutch. (and a wonderous noise that will make you want to shut down instantly)

    UPDATE

Thanks for the info. I do have drive in 5th and it will stall.

On the run home it seemed to loose drive every so often on decel in all gears. No unusual noises from the clutch or gearbox at all. It will drive in reverse but only just- quite a few revs needed to get it to move/engage. I am thinking that the GKN overdrive may have failed as it could present symptoms similar?? Any thoughts??

I'll pull the overdrive tomorrow and have a look, put back in the original PTO cover plate and gears and see. Fingers crossed it is that and not something else.

sounds a bit like a combination of 2 faults....

first up I'd be checking the clutch hydraulic hoses and pipes to make sure that one of them is not holding up the works release wise (assuming that the loss of drive comes on straight after a gear change) and that you might simply have had the reverse gear selector mech fail and its just not quite engaging reverse.

Over drive failure, unless its got a sprag clutch lockup in it will generally prevent all drive or lock up the overdrive.

If you have one of the overdrives that uses a sprag clutch or has a syncro change in it then yes, the symptoms fit for failure of the sprag clutch or the syncro unit sticking between the block and guide stages of engagement and drive is only being transmitted by the syncro cone which will be more effective in transmitting power in one direction than the other.

    UPDATE

    Thanks Dave.

Pulled thhe overdrive this morning. Replaced original innards of T/Case and bingo no more issues on the test drive I took it on.

Will monitor the condition and fingers crossed its fixed now.

Then I'll tear down the O/D to see what has gone wrong with it.... could just be the heavily tuned TD5 has taken its toll over the last 3 years.

    Cheers
