Alternative to rear bar.

There has been much discussion on Rock Sliders to protect the underside of the sills.
Is/are there alternative(s) to the Heavy duty Kaymar rear bar. Yes it does the job of protection but it is a massive piece of metal work, heavy and not inconsiderable in cost.
I was wondering whether a rock slider type of structure exists which would still offer underside protection when climbing down steps or large rocks but was not quite as, well, massive as the Kaymar?
Could one be fabricated?
Is the Kaymar actually the minimum it needs to be to protect the overhang of the D3/4?

You can make an aluminium bar for my car if you like, provided it will be compatible with the Kaymar spare wheel holders. I would love to shed some weight from the back.

I would like to see confirmation of that weight. The Kaymar setups are basically the same configeration for all 4WD's they cater for. Having tried to pick up a Patrol twin carrier setup, there is sight more difference than 40kg's, once you take off the std bumper and bracing. Based on a basic setup with one tyre carrier, I reckon you would be looking at least twice that figure. Add another swing arm and carrier with rim/tyre, and there is another 45- 50 kilos. The D3/4 vehicle weight including a tank of fuel, is closer to 2500 kilos than the often quoted 3000.
...but yes in the overall scheme of things, the weight is not a lot. Add on a bullbar, aux. tank & roofrack, and it's starting to get up there.
