    No Clutch - Defender 110 TD5

    Hi there all,

    On my way to see some clients this afternoon and I only got as far as Joondalup Dr from my office (500m) then NO CLUTCH , just the spring that pull the pedal up. Not fun driving a defender in traffic with no clutch . Back at the office checked fluid level - empty. Refill and pump the pedal, thought there was something happening then nothing again, looked under the car, puddle of brake fluid and dripping from the bell housing . Mate towed me home and I removed the slave cylinder, it came out in bits . The push rod is still in the bell housing but I can move it about two inches in and out, it feels like it is pushing the fork but when I wiggle it a bit I can push it in all the way whet feels like the end of the bell housing, it then feels like it is sliding through something.

    Seems like some has let go big time in there.

    Any thought from anybody who experienced something similar. It looks like it's time to get in there to see what happened, I'm thinking to split the box and transfer case as there are a couple of seals that also needs attention.

    Any pitfalls to be aware of if I go down that road?

    We were supposed to go down south this Friday for a week, "KIDS NOT HAPPY DAD!!!".

    Almost certainly the peg that the fork pivots on has worn a hole right through the fork. Not an expensive repair, except that the gearbox has to come out. Obviously, while this is out you would consider replacing the clutch, release bearing, seals, which all add to the cost of the job.

    John probably not the TD5 doesnt have the light tin lever.
    It has a heavy cast unit like an LT95

    Yep, that is the plan. Dropping both the boxes and do all the seals, I will also replace all the clutch components.

    I think it is something with the fork due to the movement of the push rod but I will only know when the box is out. I'll post some pics of what I find

    Coincidence, Jurgens? I had clutch failure in the 300tdi last week!

    The pedal is rock hard at the top of its travel, will not move.

    It's not the hydraulics, which work fine, but the slave cylinder piston was a long way out and the fork seems to be stopped right at the end of its travel.

    So I 'll be dropping my box, too... maybe next weekend if I can find the time. Would be keen to see what your trolley and cradle look like and maybe get to borrow them too?

    Yeh, myne was rock solid until I stood on it . Dropping the boxes is about all you can do.

    PM Disco W.A (Roger) for the gearbox jack, I've still got it with me and he said he's not in a hurry to get it back. Justfishing (Ian) made a adaptor for the T/C which worked a treat.

    What are you going to do while you have the boxes out? I did every seal on the boxes and replaced all the clutch components as well.

    Don't know if you have a preferred supplier but I found Steve at Lifestyle very helpful and prices were pritty good too, just ask and he will see what he can do.

    Let me know what Roger says and we can arrange to get together. When do you plan on doing it?
