    Puma 130

    G,day.
If the 130 does not come with ABS and TC, how does it perform in the wild ?
Surely the centre diff lock is not enough on its own ?

What have any of you done to improve traction ?

    Cheers.

    Robert.

You don't need it, with almost 3t of vehicle it's not exactly a rocket ship.

Many of us have open diffed, traction uncontrolled Landies of various forms, be they Series, Classic Rangies, One Tens, Disco 1s or Defenders. They all perform very well off road. The Defender suspension has not changed over the years so there is no reason a recent model Defender won't perform equally well off road as an older model.
Diff locks or traction control certainly make off road driving more controlled and sure footed and thus a little more leisurely, but they are not necessary if all you are doing is climbing sandhills or following fire trails.
Start rock hopping or mud plugging-then think about upgrading to locking diffs or limited slip diffs.

The only difference I've ever found between the 110 and 130 is the length, the 110 will go over where a 130 will rub it's guts, but thats the same between a 90 and 110 so buy what suits. Pat

A little play with suspension will get you a long way. With standard height coils with some +2 shocks with retaining straps to give you a little extra travel.

Next level would be 2 inch lift with dobinson flexi coils and +5 shock and mounts. I have these shocks with 3 inch coils and I hardly ever use my lockers.

The shocks I used are terrafirma. My car is a 130 to.

If anything no aids makes you read a line better.
Over Easter I went to a 4x4 park and followed a late model challenger and prado with all their electronic aids. The challenger had a locker in the rear and the 130 went every where it did. Sometimes not as gracefully, sometimes putting both vehicles to shame. Both agreed they wont have anything on me when my locker goes in.

I bought the locker a while ago before I had used the truck much. I wanted it for max traction regarding water crossing for a cape trip. However the 130 seems to do just fine the way it is.

    Hi,
the extra length is handy some times in being able to stride over the slippery bit.

Mine is stock standard and it impresses me where it will go.

    cheers

Weight is the 130s best friend, the more you load it up the better it goes, my 130 puma tray top goes better off road with about 700-1200kgs in the tray than what it does empty, prob the only 4wd on the market where this is the case, except maybe an F250? Driving without traction aids is good for your bush driving skills!
