Mantec snorkels

Just wanted to share a story that started out as an expensive horror story but now seems to have a happy ending. A few weeks ago in Point Cook I decided to use an automatic car wash. The roller that comes over the roof decided to keep ramming at the top of my LR RAI. I was trying to start and drive out and then it continued over the top. When I got the car out it had lifted back the top of the pre cleaner. I have glued it back together but I wanted to fix it properly. I had to get the tow bar fitted the next day so I asked the dealer about just getting a pre cleaner so I could rivet it back on. They only stock the whole item and it costs about $1000. I contacted Mantec by email and they originally said that as it was a LR part to see them. I was quite disappointed with this and said so. Kevin Brayne from Mantec has gained approval to just send me pre cleaner that I rivet back on for 44 pounds. This has made me very happy. The glue seems to be holding but I don't like the chances of it staying that way. So I need to say that Mantec has come to the rescue and I won't even put my pride and joy in a car wash again.

I'm surprised you put it in the carwash in the first place..

but glad that your story has a happy ending as it sounded like it would have been a very expensive mistake otherwise..

Never again. I thought it might be nicer for the guys fitting the tow bar to work on a clean car. Never again!

Interesting.
While we are on the subject, is the LR factory snorkel thingy any good.
Is it up to scratch with regard to dust and prolonged wet weather conditions, is it worth the expence or better to go aftermarket ?

PS: I read that Nugget was not happy with his snorkel but I dont know the circumstances of that.

I am yet to completely check all connections but I was warned by the salesman that they are not watertight. It will be by the time I go home to Cairns. Other than that I have heard good things about the dust separation on the head unit. I haven't had the opportunity to test this out either.

Hi,
No they are definitely not watertight, the internal ducting has slip on fittings and holes and does not seal well. Have a look at Nugget's member's ride and see what he had done with his puma. I am getting him to make up the same thing for me when he has some spare time.....

Apparently there are also some slight performance gains as that internal ducting is flattened in places and restrictive.....

I will let you know how it goes when I get around to installing the upgrade. I also have a mantec (plastic jobby) snorkel......

Mantec (or their licensed factory to be correct) manufactures a number of OEM Land Rover parts, including the RAI. Therefore the OEM RAI is every bit as good as the Mantec one, but twice the price...

It's got the Land Rover badge and the "Jerry Can" style indented X shape on the lower box, but for a few design differences it's practically the same unit.

In terms of functionality in design, they do make a claim that the aerodinamics of the head assists in cleaning dust and debris prior to being sucked in, and considering the amount of dust in my engine bay my air filter is remarkably clean. Rain can't enter at all due to the location of the intakes on the head.

You do however not have the ram air effect of the Safari as there is no big opening facing forward...
