Recovery Points: Are the standard Disco 2 ones adequate?

    hi guys
Recently got myself a discovery series 2
Had a look at the recovery points, and they don't exactly seem to be the strongest looking things.
Should i invest in some decent recovery points?
If so, where would i get them, and could i fit them myself?
    Thanks
    Muppet

The stocker ones will break. When you get you ARB bullbar it will have recovery points on them. From the rear use the tow socket.
    Cheers

Has anyone mounted aftermarket points to the stock front? (D2a) Without buying a bullbar/nudge bar? Just as a temp solution.

Someone on here whose name temporarily escapes me makes some nice units that work with or without bars.

Muppet, there are a few options for you up front, with or without a bull bar.

Member Philco was doing some nice sets to suit various vehicles w/w'out bars. I saw recently that he's working OS or remotely. Give him a go anyway.
MR Auto have near identical for similar money(~A$100).
JATE rings (look more like leaf spring hangers) are for the hardcore Military look. Available all over the place

At the rear, as mentioned you can use the towbar(without hitch in place) to attach a strap to. Not ideal, but better than slopping the loop over a towball (Anti Personnel Device).
Next up for ~$40 is a Recovery hitch that mounts in your tow hitch mount.
A machined block of steel for attaching a RATED shackle and thence your strap.
NOTE: Shop around and pay an extra $10-15 for one with mounting holes drilled in X and Y axes. This allows you to minimise the strain on the strap eye and receiver/ shackle.

Front or back you cna pick up rated hooks off the shelf from all 4WD shops.
Please, Whatever you buy though, fork out the 5-10 bucks on new, high tensile bolts?
    Hope this helps. Dave.

Thanks guys, figured the stock ones were pretty flimsy.
Rest assured dave, i have no intention of becoming to halves of a landrover owner due to improper recovering!

Damaging your new car is one issue....however, the real issue for me and many others is the many stories on here and in the media of people being killed by flying missiles...e.g. tow bar ball socket.
Have a search and see the effects of incorrect use of inappropriate recovery point!!

To this end I had the std pins for towing tested and wasn't happy with their strength so I now have 4140 steel pins for recovery use

@ chilly yeah thats what i meant haha! so a shocking video of pommy tourists trying to pull out a stuck D3 by snatching it off the tow hitch. Even worse was the extractor gunned it without taking up the slack, and the only thing he was concerned about was if it was on video! I meant to say "Two halves of a landrover owner, as in i get cut in half!
Thanks though, the advice and general helpfulness of this site is fantastic

Discoveries don't have "stock" recovery points...

You might be refering to the transportation tie downs (light punched steel rings?) which are definitely not to be used for recovery.

Like Clubagreenie wrote, using much stronger pins you can connect most rated after market recovery points to those same points that the transportation tie downs use.
