    'on-board' air compressor location?

    I would love to get your opinion on the positioning of air compressor (which may also be used for diff-locks down the line)

    I originally thought beneath the back row seats (110 double-/crew cab) where there is enough space to also mount a little tank as well as the air locker manifold; but now I'm starting to think beneath the driver seat would be even better.
    With the driver seat well empty (everything moved to the ExBox), There would be plenty space and easily be wired in without making any new holes in the body, and easy enough to get to for airing up tyres.

    Which do you think would better location to supply rear air locker?


    PS. I have the ARB twin compressor(CKMTA12)

    Position of Air Compressor

    Hi, I have a 110, and have mounted the compressor underneath the drivers seat! At first I thought it may be frustrating gaining access, but I'm really happy with this location. I have the hose and tyre chuck permanently connected. I only have the single ARB locker compressor, but the standard hose reaches easily to all four corners of the truck. It also provides excellent access for locker and wiring loom routing. It is also a great location for removing it from engine bay heat!

    You can hear it run, but our Defenders are not very sound proof anyway, just adds to the character!

    The only comment I would make, is that if crossing deep water, if there are any holes in the compartment, the water obviously comes in. However, if you block the holes with rubber grommets and silicon, then if you happen to accidentally cross REALLY deep water (speaking from experience), then the water does not easily drain out.

    I moved the ECU and fitted my compressor under the drivers seat and drilled a hole in the front and have the hose connector just poking out. Don't make the fitting come out the side, I had this on my county and when the hose is connected you can't shut the door.

    Would a compressor fit in the ExBox? I thought this would be easier again to access than under the driver's seat.

    No mate it's all good. I have an ARB compressor it's the single motor but for tyre inflation and dual lockers. You only need to poke the fitting out far enough to get to the sliding collar to remove the hose. Do a dry run in the box and work out roughly were you want the hole. Look underneath to check for obstructions. Remove compressor, drill hole in front of seat box then reposition compressor back inside box, adjust position until happy with position then mark the hole position with texta. Remove compressor and drill holes and fit.

    mines under the driver seat.......used for tyre i inflation and lockers, my hose connection is on the front bar

    I fitted an ARB compressor under the drivers seat, electrics where moved to the ex box first. Mounted it towards the rear which leaves plenty of room for hoses ect.uploadfromtaptalk1336042334885.jpg

    The outlet was mounted next to the drivers seat rail, there is room between it and the door. The hose is run up through the drivers window, plenty length to all wheels.

    onboard air compressors are most easily fitted at the front of the engine to enable simple belt driven operation. A 20l tank will bolt up under the drivers sill easily enough.

    12v powered toys can be mounted anywhere you want :-)

    Hi GlennWA, I wouldn't put it in the ExBox because of the heat that it generates and the other bits of electricery don't like to get to hot; but also ARB recommend it to be as far away from ECU, GPS etc to avoid any interference
