    Aftermarket props

I've been thinking of purchasing an after market prop for some time now , I currently have a 4.2 stacer with a 40HP Johnson pushing it. It gets up on the plane no problems and trimmed corrrectly I can nudge 50k's. I was wondering if their worth it? Will I get better fuel economy and a high top speed? Are they worth the expense?

Im VERY new to boating Aussie.
My 5.25 Stacer with 75HP Merc 2 stroke has a stainless merc "Vengance" prop.
It is extremely good on fuel,a couple of boat experienced deckies have commented on how few litres we used on the trip when we filled up after.
Cant tell you the speed etc as the speedo doesnt seem to match the GPS,the numbers on the GPS are small so I dont take much notice when under way.
PLENTY OF GRUNT,even with 3 big fellas onboard

Hydrafoils - If your referring to the little "wings" on the leg above the prop I have them fitted and they seem to bring the boat onto the plane much quicker than my other boat which didnt have them, I would recommend them.

how much time have you got :-)

But when it all boils down, unless you have a tacho its not very easy to prop tune an outboard. Unless its a new donk with a rev limiter!

27kn with your setup isnt too ugly. What prop are you running atm, is it knocked around? Do you have a tacho?

Hey thanks for the reply, yep my little chugger has a RPM gauge, when its going full noise its sitting at 5500 RPM, I have to trim the bugger out of it to get to 50K's. I have a bog standard prop with a few little chinks taken out of each blade.

    Much easier then.
First establish from you engine manual what the recommended WOT operating range is?
Ideally propped an outboard will spin at the upper end of this range at WOT with a normal load on board.
You adjust pitch, diameter, cupping and transom height to achieve this.

I assume it is an ally prop. What are the numbers stamped into the hub between the blades?
And im guessing 40hp two stroke johnno?

Generally speaking a "foil" is a crutch for a badly tuned rig. They will rob you of top end speed.

Right with you on that one.

I have had Solas props on my last 2 tinnys - first was a 4.3 Sea Jay with a 30hp Tohatsu (a tad under powered). I replaced the clapped out original item with their 4 blade version and had immediate improvement out of the hole with a load on board.
Second was a Solas 3 blade to replace the original on my 4.5 Sea Jay with a 50hp Yammy. Not a lot different performance wise (I got the same pitch prop as original) but a lot longer wearing.

The Solas props last longer than original equipment as they use a harder alloy which wears better if you spend a fair bit of time in creeks, as well as less blade flex.

They are a wealth of knowledge on all things props, so if you give them a call and discuss your requirements, I'm sure you will be pleased.
