    Which oil pump filter

I am rebuilding my 2.25 2a engine> I purchased a NOS genuine oil pump and the inlet filter is different to the original. See pictures bellow.

This is the new oil pump.

This is the old oil pump

The new one fits in to the sump ok, the only thing I can see is that the original would be better on a steep incline as the intake would be at the rear of the sump. Any thoughts.
    Cheers Rod

Looks like you have used the same picture twice. You still have time to edit your post to change one of the pictures.

    sure is!

My oil pump looks the same as your second pic - I haven't seen the other type. It looks like they have put an angle in the pipe to make it run more 'north/south' - possibly for the oil flow in the sump - I dunno - maybe one of the experts will come along soon and we can both find out!

The first (new) pump looks like the pattern shown in the Series III parts book (for petrol and later diesel engines), the second looks like the Series II version.

With no specific knowledge to work from, my thinking normally suggests that if the later version looks like it cost less to manufacture it was probably a cost saving measure, but if it looks like it cost the same or more then it was probably done to solve a problem or make an improvement, unless there's another more obvious reason for the change!

IME the (old type) inlet works well when going up steep hills, however the oil light usually comes on or flickers when going down steep hills offroad. Maybe the relocation was meant to be a compromise to remedy this.
