Modifying sump guard RRS

Gday , just wondering if anyone has made a hole in their RRS or D3 TD6 sump guard to make oil changes easier , ie cut a hole and have a small plate or grommett for easy removal instead of having to drop the sump guard for oil changes all the time . Is their any detrimental effects that may make this a bad idea ? . . Al

Can you change the oil filter with the sump plate on? I always change filters with every oil change, hence taking off the plate is part of the price. Also the plate can mask an oil or water leak so there is some advantage to taking it off, but to answer the question, I cannot think of any real good reason that a hole would do any harm - well maybe one - to your wallet if that alloy oil pan got damaged because something nailed it thru the hole - unlikely but.

Actually I always wondered why LR put the skid plate on as a matter of standard practice. About the only reason I could think of was money. Assume the engine seizes within the warranty period. The arguments would ensue as to chicken and egg - did the engine seize because the oil was consumed and the sump cracked from high centering after driving off the road during the engine seizure or did you high centre it first and then .....

The sump plate takes about 2 minutes to remove and about 3 minutes to put back on - so why would you bother cutting a hole in it. I think with a hole in it a lot of dirt would build up under the engine.

The old back aint what it used to be unfortunatly , was thinking of just having a metal cover secured by a bolt and a self tapper so i can just swing the cover sideways over a hole just under the sump plug which should keep gunge out , this way i should be able to spend less time on my back . Well that was the plan anyway .

That shows how much I know about the diesel.
My O-320 horizontally opposed aircraft engine has the oil filter on top at the rear. It is cunningly located under the engine mount supports such when unthreading and removing, one pretty much pours all the oil down the back side of the engine. I don't suppose that Lycoming and Beechcraft assisted with the design of the Land Rover oil filter location?

The Lycoming is pretty much all aluminium alloy as well - none of the case and oil pan parts are exactly cheap to purchase either.

I was concerned at first that the pump may not remove all the oil from the sump, so I removed the sump plug to see what was left in the pan. About 50 mil extra drained out so I was happy with that

Nice and clean and all done in about 15 mins.

Now that looks even a better idea , if that system only leaves about 50mm then that would not be much of a problem even if one did a proper drain every third oil change . Where did you get the pump from etc . Al

Google Pela Oil Extractors. Mine is a model PL-650. I had to extend the suction pipe which fits down the engine oil level tube so that it reached the bottom of the sump. I think there is an extra long pipe available.

I bought mine on line from a marine store in NSW, sorry cannot remember the name of the store at the moment.
