    Diff oil furryness

I did engine oil, tfr case and diffs yesterday on my 2000 4.6 and I noticed a considerable amount of furry material on the drain plug magnet for both diffs. I changed the diff oil 12 months ago using Castrol LSX 90, which was about 20k kms ago. The material didnt feel metalic or hard, but it obviously was affected by the magnetic field. It felt more like sludge. There was quite a bit of it, a full thimble full. Same front and rear diff. Is this normal? Did I leave it too long?

Its normal, better on the magnet than floating about in the oil.

This metallic sludge is normal in diffs but the amount you had for the distance traveled is on the high side. I wouldn't be too concerned though as long as the diffs aren't noisy or haven't got excessive play in the diff pinion bearings.

    Seems pretty normal.
I would only be worried if i see chrome in the oil.
Magnets are great for stopping all the swarf from floating about and causing more wear.

The guys are dead on with the bit about being normal as stated it is better on the magnet. Also it maybe you didn't get all the material out when you last changed the oil i run half a liter of Moreys in each diff and one liter in the engine at every oil change never was a big one on additives but a friend of mine who has worked on Land Rovers and Rangies in Leongatha swears by it and has a classic with over 400,000kms on it and it runs sweet. In the end it is up to the individual but i am happy with the results so far.
