    Auto oil, how and how much

    I'm about to replace the fluids in my 1999 P38 (Thor). Only concern is the automatic. There is no filler tube to check the level or indeed to put the new oil into. I presume I use the "fill till it comes out the filler plug" system, just like diffs.

    Any idea how much oil will be required as I'm sure the 9.7 litres in the manual is for a full renewal of the entire system, not just a sump change.

    If it's the ZF 4 speed like in the Disco 1 then you fill it through the dipstick tube and you don't fill it till it comes out.
    If it's not the same transmission, sorry I don't know how to fill it.

    There is no dipstick tube on this model!

    Simple
    Dump the oil from the drain plug.
    Although I will always drop the pan and change the filter & 2 off seals.
    After cleaning and a new pan gasket, fill it by syringe or hand pump until the fluid runs out of the level plug.

    Now fire up the truck, run it through the gears, open the plug and fill while the engine is running until it dribbles from the level plug hole.
    You are done!

    Note:- this does not change the fluid in the torque, & cooler etc!
    In the Professional shop we use a machine to suck the tranny dry but for the most part the service is done; however if you are pedantic about it you could simply drop the fluid again after a run up the street & repeat the fill procedure. This will be enough to circulate out all the remaining old fluid by dilution.

    Make sure you are on level ground and the EAS has leveled out and leave a door open so the RR doesnt start to sag down.
    I get about 6 liters out usually.
    As pointed out before drive it for a while and drop the fluid again ( A month )

    YOU NEED TORX tools to get the filter out.
    So dont start pulling the pan till you have them.

    Yes absolutely right mate!
    Use vaseline to locate the upper O ring in place

    If you drop the pan make sure you start each of the forked clamp units are placed & located. I start each one in the threads and be careful they are not crossed !
    For info they are 6mm x 1 bolts and easily broken!
    I use a 1/4 wobbly drive 10mm socket and extension to snug then up.
    Also care is needed to make sure the pan gasket doesn't roll up when you tighten the pan down; otherwise I will hear you cussing over here!
