RRS 19 inch tyres

Hopefully I am not covering too much old ground here, I had a decent search but couldn't find anything.

My Dad now owns a 2005 build RRS with 2.7 TDV6. It is fitted with genuine LR 19 inch rims.

Tonight he asked me what tyres he should fit if he wants to do dirt road driving. Obviously going to 17 inch rims would give a much wider choice of tyre, but I think he wants to try to avoid it.

It is currently shod with 255/50 19s. I see the Disco 19 inch tyres are 255/55 19. Are there any decent tyres available in the RRS sizing? Would changing to the Disco size cause in issues (either vehicular or legal).

I have put Cooper Zeon 255/55/19 LTZ tyres for an upcoming WA trip where I intend to go to the Bungles Bungles and Mt Augustus which is a fair bit of dirt road travel. I did not have the faith in the original Goodyear Wranglers to sustain these type of roads for any length of time. You will read others have gone the Pirelli Scorpions or the General Grabbers in the same size. Simply it is determined by what floats your boat, both price wise and availability at the time needed. I will have an opinion of my choice at the end of August. Graeme (another one)

You shouldn't have any (vehicular or legal) issues fitting the 255/55R19 size - it is the recommended "winter" tyre size for the RRS, and was the size run on the G4 Challenge cars.

My RRS ran that size for the first 8 months of it's life, and now runs on 285/60R18's which are bigger again, without any dramas.

My RRS TDV8 has the new 255 / 55 R19 General Grabber AT tyres.

I showed them to you at Mitcham before your dad got his RRS.

Our RR Club gets them through our sponsor Troy McCade at Adelaide Tyrepower.

The Speedo now reads true with these tyres.

Research indicates that in SA the tires can only be up to 15mm bigger in diameter than the standard size.
Going from a 255/50 19 to a 255/55 19 would change the diameter by approximately 25-30 mm, therefore it can't be legally done. I checked the tyre placard on the vehicle and it only mentions 255/50 19. 255/55 19 isn't listed. I will ask my friendly automotive engineer if he will mod plate a tyre size change if required (using the Disco 3 tyre size and mechanical similarity as an argument).

The upshot is that at this stage we will be stuck with 255/50 19s, probably the Grabber ATs. A decision will be made in the coming weeks.

To help your argument, you could also point to the owner's manual "approved winter tyres" section, which states 255/55R19.

I talked to the engineer today. He needs to have a quick look under the wheel arches to verify that the slightly larger tyres won't scrub (which they won't), then he will issue the mod plate. The SA rego authorities will issue a certificate to carry in the vehicle in case there are any road side issues.

I haven't looked in the owners manual, but the tyre placard definitely doesn't list 255/55 19.

The wife’s MY10 3 litre had 255/50 R19 General Grabber AT2/3’ s over a a 8 year period, however we lost three
on the last two trips due to sidewall damage. We therefore decided to give up on the low profile approach and
swapped the 19” wheels for Tuff Ant 18” steels and added Falken Wildpeak AT3W in 265/60 R18. Far more sidewall
and 🙏 less prone to swiss cheese sidewall attributes, overall difference in cost was $800 including the wheels vs replacing with GG AT’s in 19” again, not bad for 5 new tyres and what we hope is a stronger piece of footwear
