Td5 Turbo on the way out?

Just after a bit of quick advise.

I think the turbo on my Td5 is on the way out. I have massive turbo lag (doesn't feel like it come on boost to over 3000rpm) but having checked other things out can't find the root of the problem so I think it lies with the turbo.

Having taken the inlet pipe of it and trying to spin the veins with my finger there feels like a lot of resistance i.e. it does not spin freely. I thought that it would just spin like a top given a little flick but it doesn't.

Is this level of resitance in the veins normal? Seems like too much to me.

have you tried substituting for a known working MAF? Also, you can start the engine without the inlet pipe connected to the turbo, at idle the turbine should be rotating quite quickly. Trying to rotate by hand with engine off will feel reasonably 'tight' as the turbo spindle 'floats' on a film of oil, which obviously isn't there when the engine is off.

    As JC said....

More likely your wastegate is jammed open.... Check and free it up.

    Thanks,

MAF reading at idle are 39 - 41. Too low, so this may be it.

The wast gate actuator seems always to be sticking, but sticks in the closed position anyway (actuator rod fully in) which used to give me overboost, I freed that up before posting the problem but still real stiff.

I'll check the veins with the inlet off (was reluctant to do that as my engine bay was a bit mucky).

One concern I have is that I had a bit of a catastrophic oil leak a while back and thought that may have ruined the bearings in the turbo.

In a way I'm hoping that its the turbo as a VNT would be the replacement.

Oh and welcome back Mike, last time I was on here you'd just left. Are you still doing TRT?

I would pull the actuator rod off and try and free up. Mine was doing similar a couple of months back. Took it out pushed in and out with some lubricant a heap of times, wont move far and is really hard to push in and out, but is much better now. It is meant to be be real stiiff and hard to move. Little bits of sand, rust and crap can build up.
