A friend of mine has a 4.0 V6 Disco 3 and he is very happy with it. Mostly country driving returns acceptable fuel consumption and the times I have driven it (after servicing it) I was quite impressed by the get up and go it diplayed.

SupporterDoes anyone have experience with the 4.0 petrol disco 3s? A friend is in the market for a disco 3 and for the amount of driving he does, can't justify the price premium of the diesels. I heard that the 4.0 motors were abit of a dog, not only thirsty but not that responsive? Is the v8 a better motor to look for?
Thanks for your advice.

We've had out 4.0 petrol for around 3 years (2006 SE model) and no real complaints about the engine. It certainly isn't the fastest vehicle on the road but we didn't buy it for it's acceleration or top end. A bit thirsty, probably, but we also didn't buy it for it's economy. You will not get a fast and economical LR no matter which model you buy. You will however get a great 7 seater with brilliant on road comfort and off road ability.

We went through this when we bought our D3. The price difference between the petrol and diesel pays for a lot of petrol given the differences in consumption. I realise that there is a difference in power delivery but I couldn't justify the differences given the price premium.
We ended up purchasing a V8, as everything I read said that the V6 was a little underpowered especially if you were going to be towing. On long trips our fuel consumption as displayed on the car computer has been about 12.5 l/100Km. Yeh if you give it the boot the fuel consumption skyrockets, but I suppose in the end it depends on how you drive.
So far we have been very happy with the V8 and has plenty of power for towing too.
When I bought my D3, I drove all three engines and decided to go with the V8 - from my research I came to think that the V8 had very few issues and that the real world fuel consumption wouldn't be much different to the V6. Also after a driving a few, I came to realise that the V8 sounds beautiful when you give it a bootful (particularly on the high side of 4000rpm ... mmm ...). I don't regret the decision at all !
On a long trip I get similar econ to Mutley; around town short trips & bootfuls the worst is about 20l/100km. Driven consistently my overall average is about 16 - which is surprisingly good considering weight, aerodynamics, driving style etc. For economy perspective, friend of mine has 100 series 4.5 manual Cruiser which returns about 22l/100km as an overall average and doesn't go anything like the disco.
I think the additional power/torque of the V8 is useful if you do much high speed driving. And the sound of the V8 in low range when you're doing some bush work nicely compliments the sounds of nature ... hahaha !

I had a 2007 V6 SE for just over 4 years and a 100K. At the time of buying I couldn't afford or justify the 18k price jump to the TDV6.
Economy was around 16 in town with a very light foot and 10's on the highway. Acceleration was fine but you paid the price in economy if you use a lead foot.
If I had a complaint it would be range. 650 hwy, 450 around town.
Nothing wrong with the engine and the good thing is/was it's low tech compared with the TDV6 and less to go wrong.
That said, we did a lot of trips and it was a great car.
Both very good vehicles & if money is around the same price, in my experience go the V8.
I had one for a 3 week trip in 2007 & was astounded by the fuel economy (9 country roads & 13 city) driving the Great Ocean Rd. To Robe & beyond.
I have a client that purchased one of the first V8 HSE's & has now travelled over 320K Km's with no engine related issues whatsovever. Just regular maintenance. He also uses his vehicle off road & is set up with ARB bar & rear wheel carrier etc etc.
I think the V6 runs out of breath at times, this also depends on what the owner wants to do, does he intend on towing?
With the V8 if he needs the extra power at least it is there.
Cheers

Having driven D3's with all three engines I'd say the V8 is smooth, quite and powerful, the V6 is noisy, vibrates and lacks power and as reported elsewhere it isn't as economical as the V8.
I know not many people would agree with me but as I have said previously if I had my time over again I would purchase a V8 instead of the TDV6.
cheers,
Terry

If you do the sums properly the diesel will far outweight the petrol , both in economy ,resale etc etc . I was a Fleet analysist in a previous life and have done the sums over and over again....
I get 6.9L on the open highway at 110kmh and around town I do 11l/100kmh . My long term average is 8.9l/100kmh.
I drive a 2012 RRS 3.0L v6 diesel. I have also had the ecu reprogrammed by superchips and now I have power to play with as well as a smooth ride.
Petrols are fats becoming old school both in technology , economy and resale..... oh and by the way , i can beat a landcruiser sahara v8 turbo diesel off the lights and up too 100kmh every time ..........LOL
