130 Spare Tyre Bracket

Hi there,

Was hoping one of you lucky 130 owners could give me an idea of the bracket which is used to secure the spare wheel into the style sided tray.

I am going to get one as a short term stop gap until I decide whether to buy something along the lines of Rijidij spare wheel carrier, or get a canopy fabricated with mounts built in. It is also a short term prospect as I'd bet my kingdom that doing this will fatigue the metal in the tray.

If you could assist, it would be superb as I am tired of hauling my spare in and out of the tray.

And no that is not a picture of my new ute unfortunately! I wish it was as I keep finding niggly pain in the back side problems with my TD5.

Get the rijidij. Carrier, worth the money. Frees up load space too. I left the old one where it was but dont use it.

It consists of 2 bolts through the tray holding a plate with a long threaded bolt that can pivot up and down. You position the wheel so this goes through the centre. Then there is a plate with hole in centre for threaded bolt as above and two lugs on the end that go into two wheel stud holes. Then there is a bent plate with nut welded in the middle like a big wingnut to tighten it against the side. Mine kept coming loose and the spare would crash about. If not tightened up the spare would break free.

Yeah, the Rijidij is my most favoured and a more than likely. However for the now I am looking for a "cheaper" solution until I can save some more coin as the first project for the ute tray is to get it Rhino lined with rubber.

So if anyone has any photos of the gear used to secure the tyre it would be superb. For now I am just using a tie down strap of sorts!

Mine is simply a long cuphead bolt through the side of the tub and through one of the stud holes.Has worked fine for 4 years.

I have pulled mine out has I have a rijidij carrier.

it would involve some panel drilling to fit one though.

Looks like many don't have one, mines never had one, doesn't look like it was ever fitted either.

Benz, thanks for the offer. If it hadn't been for a fellow Defender owner, I don't think that would've ever happened. At the moment though I reckon I will just go down to the local fasteners place and get some nice long cup heads and the like and see how that goes until I end up with a Rijidij.

Quick question on the length of your rig now though, particularly with the Rijidij attached. Do you find you are more conscious of where and how you park and the like? It is not my wife's car, but she will drive it from time to time, and she has a incorrigible habit of backing into things!

Rick130, that is what I have done up at the moment, and if it has lasted you a couple of years, than that will be suffice for now. I do get a bit worried every now and then though as I have a nice new BFG KM2 sitting up the back. Hopefully people will leave it alone!

haha I feel safer for my car

might not be safer for others.

I don't even live in a big town.... so parking is no issue usually.

have parked the 130 a few times in Perth though.
was never really worried but I give my self heaps of room when reversing out of bays.
