Wheel Studs for Disco Alloys?

Hi there,

We are lucky enough to have picked up a pretty honest and genuine County V8 (The Count) and I am in the (too slow) process of rebuilding him. We have sourced some second hand D1 alloys and nuts but have been told that longer studs are a must. And also that we should be getting the ones with the line across the face.

I thought I had done my homework and found out that there are 40, 45 and 60mm lengths available. That they were 40 for standard steelies, 45 for alloys and 60 for Defence/130 Heavy Duty steelies. And that given that we needed to get 45's. So have sourced from a fellow forumite but he has just let me know the ones he has (with the line) are 38mm. Now I am confused and unsure.

Can someone please shed a big bright HID light on what I have gotten wrong here and what studs I actually need to buy to put D1 alloys safely onto The Count.

Can;t help you with a specific answer which is why I didn't reply earlier but I think you can owrk it out for yourself.

Do you already have the wheels and nuts?

If so put them on and count the turns.

The minimum safe turns for various wheel studs are:

12x1.5 = 6.5 turns
12x1.25 = 8 turns
14x1.5 = 7.5 turns
14x1.25 = 9 turns

And of course standard Defender studs are 16x1.5 (38mm) which doesn't appear in the table!

I didn't measure my wheel studs when I changed my wheels but the Range Rover alloys that I removed were held on with 10 turns. When I fitted the Terrafirma alooys, the provided nuts also went on 10 turns so looking at the numbers above, I figured I was fine.
