    Insurance for Discovery 1?

    Hi All,

I was hoping someone may be able to recommend an insurer. Having had a child, we've just bought a 4-door Discovery 1 to replace our old 2-door.

We were with GIO, and my wife called them today to arrange insurance for the new Landie. They wouldn't go higher than $5,500, despite the fact that we paid $8,500 for her from a dealer. (Very very tidy - 180,000km, one owner, service history, gearbox and clutch reconditioned, etc. etc., well worth the price).

Can someone recommend an insurer that will actually cover our car for its purchase price?

    Yours,
    Duncan

GIO don't want your business - try NRMA

Thanks for the suggestions so far - I'm in Victoria which would make it RACV for me, but there's no way I'm giving them money due to their position on motorcycling:

I've got my D1 insured with Shannons for agreed value of $9500. More for the add-ons than the actual vehicle!! Policy was about $500 from memory.

Ours is in for $7500 with AAMI but its an ES with options and extras so that gets the total up. Does yours have any extras? If so, estimate the cost and try adding them to your policy and see if they will bump up the total. Otherwise, old Discos aren't worth so much nowdays...

I'm the same as Spudboy. Went with Shannons. Agreed value of $10,000 for my '95 D1 V8. I also have the wifes Focus TDCI with them for a high agreed value, and they were cheaper than AAMI.

Shannons do seem to be getting a lot of business - and they are trying to get it as well. A bit different to the majoe insurers who act like they're doing you a favour...

You should also read the fine print to see where they actually cover you. Are you covered if you go off marked roads on maps? If yoiu catch fire on some obscure desert track are you covered? If you drown it crossing a river will they say you exceeded the manufacturers recommended wading capability of the vehicle? And does the policy only cover modifications/accessories actually listed on the policy? Sorry to be paranoid, but insurance isn't always insurance, if you know what I mean.
