    Defender/County transfer advice

    Hi all,

I currently have a 1987 D90 project. Started life as a County by the looks of it, with a 4 pot N/A diesel motor. I am guessing that the transfer case gearing is the 1.6 ratio for high range.

At present it has a Discovery 200tdi motor on a LT77 box. Heaps of get up and go obviously due to the ratio. It now has 255/85/16s on it but it still needs a gearing change.

Question. Should I go for the 1.4 defender ratio, or the disco 1.2? At the moment it is revving its mind out at 105 km/h so it isnt a workable solution. It is intended to be a daily driver in time so am hoping for something that can sit it on 110 comfortably.

Next question. If a decent 2nd hand transfer is hard to source and I order the gears from the UK, is it a hard install at home?

Final question, if a 2nd hand transfer is found, would anyone be interested in the 1.6 transfer case?

    Thanks for the input guys.

    Brett

    I have a D90 200tdi with
    285/75r16 tyres
    1:2 transfercase
    Standard 3.54 diff ratio
    R380 short 44L

The R380 ratios are slightly lower than the LT77...
I am currently thinking of reducing tyre size or changing diff ratios because current gearing is asking alot from the engine - its was more fun to drive when I had it on 1:4 transfer and LT77. 105kph was the cruising speed, any faster than that and it wasnt as comfortable/economical. With my current set up 5th is only good for flats and downhill.

If you are going to keep the 255/85/16's and ever intend to tow then go for a 1:4 transfer box. Go 1:2 if tyre size is closer to stock
