I didn't read all the text, but I imagine he is going to need some tall final gearing, or some tall tyres, these engines only rev to 2100rpm, Regards Frank.

In an automotive version they are normally governed at 2100 rpm. Marine spec is 2300. for a light load application like the Chev. pickup you can wind them out a good bit more. How much? Try it and see, too much and it will go bang.
It is not a serious work horse anyway. Rather a show off street rod, lots of noise, lots of smoke, both tyre and fuel, and a lot of fun. You could always run double overdrive, 2.3 diff and 24" tyres to get a respectable illegal top speed and reach it very very quickly.
I always liked the idea of one of the aluminium 8V71's for some sort of play rod. Add a turbo, intercooler, N90 injectors, in a light truck or heavy vintage chassis with two seat roadster or raceabout body.
