300TDI not run for six months

Hi Im going to see a 300TDI defender tomorrow that hasnt run for 6 months, as the owner has been away. Its at his sisters property now with a flat battery.

Anyway the battery is dead so tomrrow Im going up to look at it with a new battery. It seems in pretty good nick so I dont forsee that there will be any problem getting it to run but is there anything I should be looking out for, any common or usual issues that might occur from leaving a tdi sitting any length of time that may prohibit it from starting?

    thanks , Chris

Check the oil, water and fuel level, throw it in neutral, take a socket and ratchet onto the alternator bolt, bar the engine over a turn or 2 by hand to make sure its not stuck.

pull the wire off the fuel solenoid and crank it till the oil light goes out put the wire back on then fire it up.

if it doesnt fire in 5-10 seconds you might need to rebleed the fuel pump but thats about it..

Didn't start mine for 4 months, started first hit of the key, ran as if I'd only just started it 5 minutes beforehand.

what is the reason for doing this? i understand it will turn the engine over without throwing fuel in but dont see why??

Ensures oil pressure and reduces the wear stress and potential damage after a long absence of oil circulation.

    cheers

if the oil pump has lost prime it means the engine cant fire up without oil pressure.

barring it over by hand first simply makes sure that you dont have anything siezed on the belt end or obstructions within the engine
