With the vehicle (2.7 TDV6 pre 2007) out of extended warranty, first thing to do was to remove and blank the EGR pipes. No drama although you need to use a lot of leverage on to pull out the throttle flap spindle.

There was a huge amount of sludge on the inlet ports and in the throttle housing. Which leads me to my questions.
Were does the sludge go now?
Im guessing it will condense in the the EGR coolers.
Can this create problems? Are there any reports of early failure of the coolers resulting in loss of coolant?
Is it feasible to remove and blank the coolers and replumb the coolant?

Not a 100% certain but i believe there is only black soot that comes through the egr and will only turn into sludge when it mixes with oil mist from the turbo at the intake where the egr pipe enters the plastic air box . so if they are blanked then it should be no different to any vehicle built without egr .

Can I ask why you plug the EGR's off?

EGR's virtually just dump exhaust back into the inlet system, the thinking is that it reduces particulates as it burns them a second time only on low thottle. Only trouble is it's dirty air!
It gums up the EGR valves themselves causing issues with them staying open - less performance notably.
Also gums up everything else downstream of the point of inlet too incl the MAP sensor.

Yeah, but you'll be getting reduced fuel efficiency, not to mention of you give it a good old boot once every so often it will clear most of the soot out. Why not wait until the EGR's get stuck and then plug them? If you choose to do it

Please explain/substantiate why fuel efficiency will be reduced.

Or is that just what LR has spoon fed its mechanics?

Yeah sorry, I screwed that up. Of course it's NoX emissions. Sorry, as an apprentice we learn so much all the time sometimes we put wrong things together in our heads.

Just hope the car never needs an emissions test I guess!

I bought and fitted myself my blanking plates which are similar to these:

LAND ROVER DISCOVERY 3 TDV6 EGR BLANKING PLATE KIT | eBay

I fitted these rather than the BAS kit because from inspection you can't tell the EGR's have been blanked. With the BAS kit you actually remove the pipes connecting the EGR valves to the inlet box.
With both kits you remove the butterfly vane from the inlet box.

The BAS kit can be fitted without removing the pipes.
