My hubby's workhorse Defender 130 dual cab has just started "whining" in the low gears! When I was a kid dad used to call it "a whine in the diff!" Can anyone enlighten me on what this actually is? My Disco would never behave this badly!

If it only whines in the low gears than it may not be the diff.
A diff will usually whine on the open road at certain speeds under certain conditions.
If its whining in Low Range that is quite common if you are talking about first, second, and third in a 5 speed then it may well be the layshaft bearings.

Would be good to know what year vehicle we are talking about
