    steering box/relay?

    ive got no idea on how this thing works or how to fix it, i assume it should be filled with oil? mines dry, need to rebuild itjust wondering how to do it and how in hell does it come out of the chassis?

    sometimes they are very hard to get out and word of warning their is a large spring that can be a PITA, i should have some photos somewhere so brb

    I thought i saw the pic just the other day but now i cant find it.
    do you have any manuals for the s1?

    Do a search on steering relay - there has been quite a lot of discussion. The relay remained unchanged except for minor details, and are fully interchangeable, throughout Series production, so anything in Series 1/2/2a/3 is relevant. (Very early 80s were significantly different but still interchangeable)

    The unit can be overhauled in situ, and as you will have found if you followed up on this search, can be almost impossible to remove. The steering arms need the pinch bolt to be fully removed to get them off, as the bolt goes through a groove in the shaft.

    Before attempting to disassemble the unit you should have a manual, which shows how to do it safely (see "Shop" above for the manual on CD). The unit contains a powerful spring, which is in compression, and may cause serious injury or death if not handled correctly.
