    Td5 fuel issue

    Ideas welcome, I recently did a full service on one of my td5 130s, after changing the fuel filter, priming and starting, the fuel pump runs for around 20 seconds before stopping, the guy who drives it tells me it turns over when cold for around 10 seconds then fires, unusual because it has always stared with just a touch on the starter. I reprimed it, tried it again no luck...no change in driving it, power or starting it when hot...but.. I can hear the fuel pump running whilst the engine is at idle??? I used a ryco filter, so I fitted a new genuine filter, and sender incase it was a faulty unit...no luck.. The mechanic suspects a fuel pump but said that any he had seen fail, showed no signs of failure, they just died.
    Glow plugs are checked and ok, anyone had anything similar happen..
    My employee in the ute is working in a very remote part of the brindabella ranges and has no phone coverage so I want to get it sorted quickly..cheers for any ideas.

    Sorry I can't help you with the starting issue, however I would not use a ryco filter. I used one on a tractor once and was told by a perkins diesel dealer to pull it apart and have a look at how much filter material was in it.
    Well I did and there was twice as much fiter paper a CAV filter than the ryco one. So no more rycos, I don't care how much a fuel filter is it is still cheap compared to replacing pumps and or injector.

    hi, i hada problem with my td5 starting, after changing the fuel fillter .my mate who fitted a long range tank, said turn key pump,peddel 6 times,turn key off .repeat,and again .it then started a bit lumpy for second or two,then settled down,back to normal i hope this works for you .

    It may just be co-incidental...

    check/clean Maf and Crank angle sensor.

    if you can still hear the pump for quite a while after the filter change, then there is still air getting into the system. i would start with checking the filter centre o ring isn't damaged etc. the intank pump puts out about 80 psi so there is an opportunity right there for some issues if the filter seal/s aren't up to scratch.

    there is a slim chance you have either a fuel pressure reg problem or leaking injector copper washer too, does the problem get worse if vehicle parked facing up hill overnight?

    I seem to recall that if you get significant air into a TD5, as might happen with a suction line leak or faulty injector seats it can be a bugger to bleed. I remember reading about a process of turning on the ignition and pressing the go peddle 5 times to trigger a purge and doing that a few times until the air is out.

    Thanks guys, Ive changed all of the o rings, filter, sensor, the car has done about 2000km in 2 weeks since the issue first began, will do abit more fiddling tonight and see if i can re bleed the system, will also look at the other sensors mentioned, but im still leaning towards a fuel bleed issue.

    Td5 fuel issue...update

    Just An update on my hard to start td5 130 tray top. The problem was a combo of buggered connections on the inlet side of the fuel filter housing and 4 out of5 injector washers stuffed. Unfortunately I had no option but to get a land rover dealer to fix it as they were opened over the new year and I needed the ute back at work on the 2nd Jan. I say unfortunate because the repair bill came in at $2280! $350 in parts and the rest in labour... Not a happy camper, needless to say I ripped it up the service manager about $170/hr labour charge..LR are kidding themselves..
