D4 wouldn’t recognise the trailer locking the electric brakes

Not sure if it’s my D4 but I hired a Jayco Caravan for a week and the adventure stooped before I could even get out of Sydney yesterday. The D4 wouldn’t recognise the trailer and the electric brakes on the Jaycp kept lockingup.

Eventually, it fully locked up fully causing a bit of a traffic jam on Sydney Southern Cross Drive yesterday(apologies to everyone).

The Jayco connected to the D4 via a Narva 7 Pin Large Round Socket to 7 Pin Flat Plug onthe trailer. The Jayco was towed away connect to a Pagero without an issue. Any ideas why it didn’t recognize the Jayco and kept locking the electric brakes?

Bit more info, do you have an electric brake controller or were they electric override brakes on the Jayco. Did the Jayco have LED lights?

If you have an electric brake controller, have you used it before and was it installed by someone who knows D4's?

This is a standard issue with D3s and D4s - the wiring for the trailer is European spec and the Jayco would have been Aust spec - as far as trailer brakes are concerned the two are not compatible.

Basically the car has seperate wires that power each tail light in the trailer (Aust systems run both trailer lights off one wire).

One of the tail light wires in the car connects to the trailer braking circuit in the trailer so when the lights come on it activates the trailer brakes. This circuit in the car needs to be modified - should have been done when the trailer braking system was installed in the car.

There must be a thousand posts on this issue so do a search and more will become clear.

A Portable Electric Brake Controller came with the Jayco which did not have LED's.

If you look at the wiring diagram for the Hydrastar XL portable controller, it requires the blue wire NOT to be connected to any circuit. I'm guessing the way the rental place has them set up is that they assume that if you don't have a brake controller then Pin 5 (which is the brake controller circuit) is not connected. As mentioned by Garrycol LR/Europe split the tail light circuits across Pin's 5&7 hence the issue.

What's the best adapter for connecting the D4 to a trailer, seeing that quite a few hire places in NSW seems to do flat connection. Also looking at 12N pin configuration, it's very different from the Australian configuration, except for key items such as brake and indicator. What a nightmare!

If the black round plug has been setup for Australia, then a normal black round plup to flat pin is fine.

But like anything LR does, more than likely what they have done is either nothing OR they have had a 7 pin flat plug retro fitted, which is what they did to our D4.

So what needs to be done is, get your black round plug re-wired to suit Australian trailer wiring, apparently it's not that hard, and is only a matter of changing 2 or 3 wires around in the plug, or so I've been told.

It's all relatively easy to do but it's best to done in the section of the loom in the left rear storage compartment. The connectors are easily seen, one for the trailer (black plug) and one for power (white plug). The back of the LR trailer connectors (12N & 12S) are sealed with waterproofing compound so best to leave those as they are.

Just pull the fuse in the rear of the car (towing wiring harness) for the relevant tail light (noting both trailer tail lights will work off the cars other tail light circuit) - this circuit is the one that is feeding into the blue brake circuit of the trailer. On the 'cold' side of the fuse you have just pulled plug in the wire from the brake controller that works the electric trailer brakes - all should be OK brake wise. I am not up on D4s for trailer recognition so will leave that to others.

I have a converter to change the round socket to a flat pin socket as it seems that this is what most trailers have these days.
