    Are these winches any good?

Hi I know you get what you pay for but I'm curious, has anyone bought/used one of these? are they any good?

It looks very similar to my Aldi winch, which has been very good.

For that price, surely it's worth a go?!

Couple of things that I noticed, 1. there is no thimble in the hook eye of the cable which will lead to premature wear and 2. the Safe Working Load (SWL or Working Load Limit (WLL) is around 1100kgs. If it is good quality wire, the 5 and a half thousand kgs advertised is the Guaranteed Breaking Strain (GBS) of the wire and they are stretching it at that. 9.5mm wire is for toys, at least 11mm for heavy duty use, as in winching a bogged 2 tonne LR. Remember a winch is no stronger than the SWL/WLL of the wire cable on the drum, 256:1 ratio is good but cable looks like crap, Regards Frank.

Thanks Guys yeah if you reckon the cable is too light then maybe not worth getting as I dont want to replace on top of cost of it.

The cost of a decent wire rope or even Dyneema shouldn't be a huge cost, seeing as the winch itself is so cheap. Find a rigging supplies shop and they will make a decent 11mm IWRC winch cable, or see if you can get a Tirfor cable, can usually buy one already made up. If you get one made, let them know it is for a winch, winch cable (in this instance) has 7 strands, instead of the usual 6, Regards Frank.

There are some good points as well the 256:1 gear ratio and the 6 H.P. motor is good, for the price of a decent cable you could have a good winch, Regards Frank.

Frank's the man when it comes to knowing rigging.

If you do get one, replace the cable with something stronger (I had a quote the other day for 30m of Dyneema with all fittings for my winch for $125) and repack the grease (tutorial here: http://www.aulro.com/afvb/projects-t...ng-grease.html) you should be ahead still.

Do a search on here for Aldi winches, and you'll find mostly positive reviews of them.

    rope version

(nb. Thanks from a winch beginner like myself, for the positive comments from all contributors on this thread re: rope/cable sizing/replacement/grease cables etc.)

I note that on the sellers store there is a dyneema rope version for a buy-now price of $80 more than the 9.5 cable version. The rope versions starting reserve price is $50 more on the auction/bid version.

    cheers
