    2.25 Diesel into S1 86 Petrol

Has anyone done this or aware of one?

In theory what are the pro/con?

    Which Clutch/ Gbox/ Trans combination ?

Diff ratio standard or change? or use 7.50 x 16 and or overdrive ?

I have an engine, which will need the bore done and check bearings ect which needs Starter and Exhaust manifold.

I assume the engine will bolt up to existing mounts and utilise current/ or S2/3 radiator .Do I have the option of using current 2l bellhousing/ clutch and gearbox ect? or am I better off using newer alternative?

The idea would be to make the car more economical/ reliable and powerful for everyday use.

    Thanks in anticipation.

You can use the s1 gearbox but you will need a s2/2a/3 bellhousing.
The 2.25 should fit in no worries you just need to make different engine mounts

If you are going to have it as an everyday driver you may want to put in a s2a or s3 gbox

I would think a Tdi would be the best though if you are going to do this type of mod.

Why 2a instead of 1? Not much difference.

The engine will fit, but will be pretty tight - Rover found it necessary to increase the engine space and wheelbase by two inches to fit it in. I think the mounts fit, but you will need the 2/2a or 3 bell housing. You should fit the diesel clutch.

The engine is designed to use the same gearing as the petrol engine, so there is no need to change. Power is up compared to the 86's petrol engine (just) and torque is much lower rpm. The gearbox, transfer case and diffs remained essentially the same from when the 86 was built to the end of Series production. Later boxes had various improvements, and the late 2a boxes are usually considered the best, but the difference is not much, and all are interchangeable. The transfer case changed even less, although the heavier intermediate shaft is more durable. The Series 3 box is all synchromesh (1/2/2a has synchro only on 3/4) but is usually considered more fragile, and costs a lot more to overhaul.

My 80" has a 2.25 diesel & Series 3 gearbox (was already fitted when I bought it).
No modifications to the fire wall or radiator panel, just new engine mounts, so there should be plenty of room in an 86".

I also run 235/85/R16 tyres to raise the gearing.

If i was going to put the effort on doing a diesel conversion in a series land rover I would pick an 88 or 109 and put a 200tdi in it

    Reusing the S1 box

Just a note, if you use the S1 box then unless you use a series 2 bell housing you have a problem with the layshaft bearing size. It is easy to machine up a spacer or match up a bearing to the larger size. Best of luck.
