If you're lucky because it only did it once it was up to temp its the head gasket.
Try a simple compression/leakdown across the pots, if its not cross feeding or pressurising when its cold you're in with a chance.
Spent some time yesterday diagnosing a potential purchase. 200 tdi Defender.
Ended up getting it going, only to have it pressurise the coolant system once it got up to temp. Previously got hot before parking it up 6 months ago.
After pulling the injectors, number 3 pot does a good job at shooting water 4 foot in the air. When turning it over by hand.
This is a bit of a long shot i Know, although from my description can anyone suggest if this may be only a gasket of more than likely the head?
Would give me a better idea of what to offer them.

I made up a contraption to pressure test the coolant system as per your previous advice too. Guess I'll need this to test the above too?
why not...
get an old glow plug that suits the engine (or use a dedicated leak down testing unit) gut it and then weld on an air fitting or a schraeder valve
then
Remove a glow plug, pull the rocker cover off, unadjust all the valves (so they all stay closed) wind in the modded glow plug then pump air onto it
With all the other glow plugs removed if you get air coming out of adjacet glow plugs you have a cylinder-cylinder head/gasket failure. If it comes out the expansion tank you have a combustion chamber to cooling system leak.
do the cooling system pressure test with the glow plugs out and slowly turn the engine over if coolant or air comes out the glow plug hole you have a leak.

If it was parked up after the event, and the cooling system not drained, then the bore/s will be no good. Hope it is OK, as heads for the 200Tdi are getting harder to get now....

The water failure only occurred after I got it up to temp, then it let go. Started fine and was running sweet up until then. I had 15 psi on the system starting off cold until it got warm and let go.
I drained the coolant afterwards, thinking leaving any moisture in there was not a good thing. Sounds like I better get back to this sooner rather than later.
I've been offered a reco head by a good samaritan on here too.![]()
