    STT's & Rock Sliders

Learnt a few valuable lessons yesterday on a little off road trip up around the back of Lithgow with 'da defender boys'. It was our first time out in the D3 after getting a few mods done, usually we would take the twin locked, 33 inch tyred, 4" lifted D1. Anyway to say I'm pleasantly surprised at how good the D3 is off road would be a understatement.

Lesson 1 Good Rock Sliders are worth their weight in gold off road on rocky tracks.

lesson 2 As Barry keeps telling me, Cooper STT's are rubbish.

lesson 3 245x 70x17" tyres are not tall enough when trying to follow Defenders even with Llam's set on max.

Still had a great time, the rock sliders have some good scraps and dents, the Coopers have lost about a quarter of their knobs which have been ripped off.

And the BB6 rims have quite abit of rock rash now, especially on the fronts ...

And best of all only got stuck properly once on a reasonably decent sized rock step going up the Spanish Steps, a bit of road building and up we went. The problem was the D3 ended up sitting on its under belly, obviously taller tyres would have helped that greatly.

I reckon If there was a way of fitting 33's on the D3 without compromising the vehicle as a road car to much then it would be very hard to stop it going most anywhere.

    cheers,
    Terry

265/70R17 should be the offroad defacto standard for a D3!!

    I had a set of 265 x 70 x 17 MTZ's on my D3.

The transformation of road was incredible.

The only thing I would do if running this size is have an emergency inflation kit such as GOE's.

    Cheers

Whilst there are times when an extra half an inch ground clearance makes a difference they're still a fair way off 33".

Hmm and here was me thinking about taking them off your hands - I think I might have to pass now.

You can get tyres (certain MT's) that are marked 265/70R17 that are around 32.5" in real terms.

Yep Coopers are rubbish, but I've always known this

I agree with GG, 265/70/17 is a good size for the D3/4, BUT, they are only 31.6" not 32.5", 285/70/17 is 32.7" though and an excellent offroad size for the D3/4, for playing only of coarse and available in Mikey Thompson MTZs

That's calculated size - not real size.

A should have given a special mention to Liam (Yorkie) in his D2. He went every where everyone else went, usually leading in fact, in his old girl that has few mods done.

Here I am talking about how the D3 kept up with the Defenders and out front was Liam in his D2, so hats off to the man. ...

    Cheers,
