Newbie Disco 2 setup
Hi all,
I recently got my first disco and am very happy with it so far- especially after stepping out of a Forester.
It's a series 2 SE TD5 7 seater with 150K on the clock. We have had it out on Stockton beach and on a couple of old logging trails in the Gloucester tops. We will not be tackling anything really tough and want to set up so that I am confident I can get out of anything I get into.
I joined the forum a few months back and have been checking out different threads for ideas.
I have so far replaced all filters/fluids, installed the EGR bypass, fixed the oil leak from the injector harness, replaced the turbo/intercooler hoses, fitted a new bull bar and put new 265/60 rubber on it. The rubber still clears the guards but occasionally just touches a guard liner on full lock and the speedo now reads 6% under.
I'm now tossing up if I should be fitting a 50mm lift. I really like the rear air suspension so would not be converting to springs as 90% of the time we are on hardtop. I have also been given a set of king HD standard front springs so considering the 50mm strut lift and sticking with standard height springs. The shocks look like they are the originals but are still providing a nice ride.
I am also wondering about recovery points. I gather I need to fit a set of something decent up front and hoping I can stick with the tow point at the rear as she looks pretty solid.
Any advice/guidance on a solid basic setup and if I have missed anything important would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance
Scotty

You'll get a lot of responses each telling you what they did or dream of doing.
Here is mine.
If you want to keep it a comfortable daily driver but add a bit of confidence get:
1. a front recovery point fitted (Davis Performance Landys are your friends here)
2. a central diff lock (if pre 2002 and not already fitted) from Ashcroft in the UK
That will let you get out of most situations.
If you want to be way cool and cruise over practically any terrain put a TrueTrac in the front diff and/or TrueTrac or Detrot locker in the rear (but do not tell anyone and they will think you are the best off-road driver in the world).
If you put a suspension lift in you rase the car up so you are less likely to hit the sills on rocks but the longer springs need to be stiffer to stop excessive body roll. So you change the discos driving characteristics and most importantly reduce the articulation which can reduce your off-road abilities. Watch the off-road videos soft suspension = long wheel travel = good off-road abilities.
The above is cheep and you'll go places you never thought possible.

hey Scotty, join your nearest land rover club and go out with them and just do some tagalongs with them....chicken out when you want to....no one cares....and just develop your relationship with your disco and its capabilities....it will out perform your initial doubts and put a great smile across your face and youll develop a smugness when other 4wd owners ie non landy...start talking about their vehicles....if youre not going to tackle difficult terrain you dont need to lift it....the 265's have already lifted it about 40mm.
